The Shrewsbury and Telford NHS Trust – Consultant in Care of the Older Adult
The Trust has an exciting opportunity for two Consultants in the Care of the Older Adult department at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital. These posts are aimed at expanding the department and developing front‑door acute frailty and short‑stay ward capabilities across the Trust. The post holder will work across both sites, beginning at PRH to support the opening of Frailty SDEC.
Key Responsibilities
* Deliver high quality care for frail older patients on our base or outlying wards and respond to referrals from other specialities.
* Work within the multidisciplinary teams on the acute floor and base wards to ensure care is delivered to patients in the most apt environment.
* Focus on care closer to home and utilise community partners and services (virtual ward and community hospitals) to reduce hospital general medicine/on‑call duties.
* Maintain enhanced clinical skills, especially in the assessment and management of acutely ill patients.
* Work well in a multi‑disciplinary professional team – good team‑working skills with a professional attitude.
* Good written and verbal communication skills within the multidisciplinary team and with patients and their relatives.
* Deliver clinical and quality targets agreed both nationally and locally with clinical teams and commissioners.
* Engage in outpatient clinic work (including the development of hot clinics).
* Appetite to develop new services (surgical liaison, continence) and take on appropriate leadership roles.
* Open to cross‑site working.
Job Plan and Working Pattern
A formal job plan will be agreed between the successful candidate and their Clinical Director and consultant colleagues on behalf of the Medical Director within 3 months of starting in post. A full‑time job plan is based on an 11‑PA working week. The job plan will be reviewed annually and covers all aspects of a consultant’s professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education and managerial responsibilities.
