Overview
We are looking for an experienced, motivated individual who can fully engage with and support the Hep B & Fibroscan clinics. You will be required to work collaboratively with patients and staff to deliver a specialist service based within the clinic, and to provide high quality, individually tailored empathetic advisory support to patients, relatives and staff. Ideally you will have experience of working within a clinic set up and have in-depth knowledge and understanding of supporting a client through various Hepatology conditions and treatments. We are looking for an experienced nurse with excellent communication skills – both written and verbal – and a good telephone manner. This role is for a B6 in Hepatology, working as part of a team of specialist nurses within the Hepatology and Gastroenterology Strategic Business Unit. The Department of Hepatology provides specialist care for patients with liver disease, including tertiary services in Hepatology.
Responsibilities
* The Royal Surrey is commissioned as the lead provider for Hepatitis C and Primary Biliary Cholangitis for Surrey and a designated centre for rare liver diseases. Close liaison with the surgical hepatobiliary team is maintained and hepatologists manage the regional hepatocellular cancer MDT and a trials portfolio.
* The department has also been commissioned by NHS England to deliver the first wave of Liver Health Checks pilots in England aimed to diagnose and engage people with cirrhosis in cancer surveillance pathways.
* Each CNS in Hepatology is the designated lead for part of the service and this post is required to provide oversight and governance for the FibroScan service in addition to general hepatology clinics.
* However, all the hospital-based CNS team are expected to develop a broad working knowledge of general hepatology including viral hepatitis (B and C), haemochromatosis, the management of metabolic liver disease, alcohol-related liver disease, and complications of cirrhosis, to foster teamwork and cross-cover between the nursing staff. There is flexibility within the job plan and the successful candidate will work alongside the Consultant team in their scheduled outpatient clinics.
* The post holder will work autonomously within the multi-disciplinary team supporting the delivery of a comprehensive hepatology service for the local hospital-based population.
* The post holder will be trained to deliver diagnostic FibroScan and will be responsible, with colleagues, for the delivery of the diagnostic FibroScan service vital for the delivery of 18 weeks in Hepatology.
* Following a period of training the successful candidate will be expected to maintain a caseload within hepatology, delivering outpatient clinics in general hepatology including viral hepatitis with indirect supervision from the consultant team.
* Many patients with liver disease require health promotion and lifestyle advice, and the CNS team are central to this service offering, e.g. specific advice for people living with chronic hepatitis B.
* The post holder will have responsibility for the assessment, planning and organisation of a broad range of activities and programmes of care, and the development, implementation and evaluation of individualised care needs including FibroScan.
* The post holder will work with managerial and administrative staff to oversee the FibroScan service, ensuring timely access to diagnostic scan delivery and, where appropriate, same day diagnostics to support delivery of 18-week targets in Hepatology.
* The post holder will participate in educational activities and clinical audit in this specialised area, ensuring development and progression of practices and guidelines within this environment.
* The post holder will be accountable for their nursing practices delivered to the patient and will be responsible for their own professional development, adhering to the policies and protocol of the Trust and the regulatory body for the nurse (NMC).
Qualifications and Experience
* Experience as an acute or clinic-based nurse with strong communication skills (written and verbal) and a good telephone manner.
* Registered nurse with current NMC practice and appropriate scope of practice for Hepatology and FibroScan services.
* Experience of working within a clinic setup and in supporting patients through Hepatology conditions and treatments is desirable.
* Ability to work autonomously within the multidisciplinary team and to provide governance for the FibroScan service.
