Assistant Harbour Master/Wye Navigation Officer – ID 32066. Join the Environment Agency’s small but dedicated team in Lydney Harbour, Gloucestershire. The role is a dual position: Assistant Harbour Master and Wye Navigation Officer, responsible for ensuring statutory harbour responsibilities and safe navigation on the River Wye.

Key Responsibilities
* Support the safe and efficient operation of Lydney Harbour.
* Deputise for the Harbour Master when required.
* Act as Navigation Officer – oversee navigational safety, compliance with maritime regulations, and the Wye Navigation legislation.
* Monitor tides, weather conditions and marine traffic; update safety protocols and report incidents.
* Respond to emergencies, on‑call and out‑of‑hours duties.
* Plan, report, hold meetings and communicate with stakeholders, the National Navigation Team and local users.
* Support implementation of the Port Marine Safety Code and the Wye Navigation Order – 2002.
* Assist in asset management and long‑term strategy for the West Midlands waterways.
Experience and Skills Required
* Safe work practices and risk awareness in marine or operational environment.
* Navigation experience, professional or recreational; familiarity with safety‑critical environments.
* Knowledge of statutory frameworks: Port Marine Safety Code, Wye Navigation Legislation (desirable). Willing to learn quickly.
* Willingness to travel to Rivers Wye/Lugg for training and operational duties.
* Physically capable of manual tasks – lifting, carrying, maintenance/repairs.
* Strong communication skills with customers, colleagues and stakeholders.
* Proactive problem‑solving, initiative, especially in time‑critical or emergency situations.
* Ability to build constructive relationships with local users, partner organisations and regulators.
* Commitment to continuous technical and practical learning, including overnight courses.
* Competent in MS Office; accurate reporting and record‑keeping.
* Flexibility: willing to work evenings, weekends and out‑of‑hours, including emergency response.
* Full UK driving licence.
* Distance‑able to reach Lydney Harbour within 1 hour.
