The post will support the increasing demand on the Glaucoma service within the department. The posts provide a unique opportunity to re-structure the Glaucoma service and ensure the provision of a high-quality service, with the development and maintenance of standards through clinical audit, evidence-based research and appraisal.
The post holders must have subspecialty training in Glaucoma and have completed a substantial number of specialist glaucoma procedures and demonstrate competency in performing specialist procedures independently in theatre. The posts are based primarily at Whipps Cross University Hospital, though the post holder may be required to work across the Trust at any time. There is a 1 in 10 second on call commitment. The glaucoma team comprises, a glaucoma fellow, glaucoma trained nurse specialist and a team of optometrists and orthoptists plus deanery trainees.
Job Purpose:
* Specialty glaucoma clinics
* Urgent care; post holder will be expected to support rapid access clinics as part of the regular timetable
* Glaucoma surgery – proficient in MIGS techniques
* Cataract surgery: The post holder is expected to take a full role in providing cataract surgery in the Trust, and be expected to manage cataract lists in line with GIRFT recommendations
* Consultant on-call rota: Be available for immediate advice to assist the junior doctor on call in the management of emergency cases
* Training deanery trainees, fellows; Teaching of junior doctors is an important part of clinical practice. It is envisaged that all consultant will have a part in teaching and training.
* Attendance at Trust and College Educational Supervision training is encouraged.
Aims:
* • To develop and lead the Glaucoma service
* • To train allied healthcare professionals (AHP) in extended roles
* • To participate actively in clinical trials, research and teaching
* • To support the Ophthalmology unit in achieving its goal of high-quality eye care for the local population of North-East and East London
Key result areas:
* · Increase capacity for new glaucoma referrals
* · Increased capacity for follow-up glaucoma patients
* · Provide new surgical procedures such as 'tube' & MIG surgery for complex glaucoma
* · Work collaboratively with the Lead Eye Casualty Consultant to improve the patient pathway for emergency glaucoma presentations (PEEC)
* · Work collaboratively with Community optometrists
* · Developing virtual glaucoma clinics
