Job overview An opportunity has arisen in the Microbiology department at Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, part of the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Pathology Partnership, for a substantive Band 7 Advanced Biomedical Scientist with I.T. responsibility. The post holder must demonstrate specialist knowledge and be responsible for the management of sections of the laboratory, ensuring a quality, continuous, clinical diagnostic and therapeutic service. In addition, the post holder will be the department’s I.T. specialist for the Laboratory Information Management System. They will support the departmental operational manager to ensure provision of service to patients from Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and the Primary Care Trust. The post holder will participate in the provision of a comprehensive 24/7 acute service and as such will be required to work as the duty BMS on-call. The post holder will maintain State Registration through the Healthcare Professions Council and have an influential role in developing the service to meet the needs of the Clinicians and other Healthcare workers. Main duties of the job The post holder will be responsible to the laboratory operational manager and have a key role in operating the framework for quality management across sections of the laboratory. This is to include quality and clinical governance, staff development, information management, strategic planning, supplies management, capital procurement and personnel. On a professional level, the post holder will be expected to manage a section/s of the bacteriology laboratory, ensuring that all designated tasks are completed. They will use professional judgment to support and advise requesting clinicians upon effective diagnosis and treatment to improve patient management and participate in the out-of-hours and emergency service as required. The post holder must maintain competence to practice to the ‘Standards of proficiency for Biomedical Scientists’ set by the HCPC through participation in continuing professional development, adhere to the requirements of the Data Protection Act and fulfil any other duties assigned by the Operational Manager or Consultant Microbiologist, which are required for the smooth running of the Microbiology Department.
