To facilitate learning in the Science departments as the Technician through research, development and preparation of experiments. To support students and teachers in Science with practical experimentation and supervise some independent student learning. Management of departmental assets, equipment and chemicals will also be integral.
Key Responsibilities
1. Liaise with teaching staff and management to research, develop and prepare equipment & consumables for;
- Practical assignment work by students
- Practical demonstrations by tutors/the technician
- Externally assessed experiments
2. Industrially clean laboratory glassware and later redistribute to ensure appropriate stocks of glassware are kept in each laboratory/ready for use
3. Maintain teaching/preparation laboratories in a safe, clean state for completion of practical science, including in accordance with the college Health & Safety policies
4. Ensure equipment is kept clean, safe, in proper working order, and organised effectively
5. Support students in some independent research projects, including:
- Giving advice on experimental methods
- Assisting in construction of student-specific apparatus
- Preparation of/advance ordering of chemicals
- Supervising students in separate laboratory spaces
- Coaching students through all aspects of research projects
6. Independently manage departmental COSHH for all chemicals and oversee departmental chemical stocks including re-ordering as needed through college systems
7. Synthesise risk assessments for hazardous equipment in line with college policies and formatting
8. Monitor scientific assets in specific asset registers and collaborate with the facilities department to arrange servicing and repairs where necessary
9. Undergo training and train departmental staff where possible on new technology, including:
- Anatomage® Digital dissection table
- GC/MS
- HPLC
- Various Spectroscopy
- Molecular Biology
10. Assist in preparation & running of extracurricular activities to ensure completely seamless operation, including:
- Student interview evenings
- External competitions
- Open/community days
- New starter days
11. Supervise students from other establishments during their industrial placements and train them on how to effectively work in a functioning laboratory environment
12. Attend appropriate courses as & when required, and take a full & active role in personal development, including:
- Industrial updating
- First Aid
- Health & Safety
- Basic Information Technology
- Safeguarding
13. To ensure that all other duties that are deemed appropriate by the College are carried out.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
Qualifications
Essential Criteria
14. Must be educated to at least two A Level or equivalent in Physics, Chemistry or Biology
15. GCSE (Grade 4-9) Maths and English or equivalent level 2
Desirable Criteria
16. Educated to degree or equivalent in a Science subject.

22. Good organisation, reliability and the ability to support both staff and learners effectively.

25. Knowledge of recent level 3 biology and chemistry practical experiment
