Overview
As a SEN Primary Lead at Odyssey House School, Wokingham, you will lead and inspire high quality teaching and learning opportunities across the primary phase that encourage, support, and enable students to achieve good progress and outcomes and to be successful learners. You will also provide pastoral care to students as required and be aware of individual students’ mental health and wellbeing needs. In addition, you will communicate effectively with parents and other stakeholders in order to enhance students’ development and achievement. The postholder may be required to do other duties appropriate to the level of the role.
The Lead Primary Teacher will model excellent teaching, support colleagues in their professional development and contribute to the strategic direction of the school.
You are required to fulfil and meet the responsibilities and duties as set out in the Teachers’ Standards (2012) and the current DfE ‘Keeping Children Safe in Education’ and current DfE ‘The Prevent duty’.
Duties And Responsibilities
* Teaching and Learning
o Deliver outstanding, high-quality, differentiated teaching to pupils with a range of special educational needs (SEN), in line with Odyssey House School and Independent School Standards.
o Plan and deliver engaging lessons with clear objectives, tailored to pupils’ prior attainment, learning styles, and individual needs.
o Set high expectations for behaviour, progress, and presentation, fostering a purposeful and inclusive learning environment.
o Monitor pupil progress through effective assessment, feedback, and intervention strategies.
o Support literacy and numeracy development across the curriculum and provide catch-up support where needed.
o Supervise Learning Mentors and contribute to the development of subject delivery within the school’s ethos.
o Monitor teaching of other teachers in the primary department to ensure shared objectives are being met.
o Ensure curriculum coverage, continuity and progression in all areas of learning.
* Assessment, Recording and Reporting
o Maintain accurate records of pupil progress, lesson planning, and assessment outcomes.
o Provide constructive feedback and set clear targets for improvement.
o Use data to inform planning and set aspirational targets for pupils.
o Prepare reports and contribute to formal assessments, parent meetings, and school-wide tracking systems.
* Pastoral and Safeguarding Responsibilities
o Act as a form tutor, providing pastoral support and monitoring social and academic development.
o Promote good attendance and punctuality, intervening where necessary in line with school policy.
o Liaise with parents, carers, and external agencies (e.g. GPs, social workers, therapists) under the guidance of the SENCO and Headteacher.
o Uphold safeguarding responsibilities and contribute to a safe and supportive school environment.
o Ensure safeguarding issues are dealt with appropriately and promptly alongside the Primary Deputy DSL.
o Support behaviour management strategies and uphold school values.
o Build strong relationships with students, parents and the wider school community.
* Professional Responsibilities
o Attend staff meetings, training, and contribute to the school’s professional development programme.
o Support and implement school policies and act as a role model in conduct, dress, and punctuality.
o Meet deadlines and contribute to the smooth running of the school, including cover duties and other responsibilities as assigned.
o Work flexibly and collaboratively to support the wider aims of the school and Odyssey Education Services.
o Lead CPD sessions and contribute to staff training programmes.
o Stay up to date with educational research and best practices.
o Participate in performance management and appraisal processes.
* Leadership Responsibilities
o Mentor and support primary teaching staff.
o Lead curriculum development and innovation across the primary phase.
o Monitor teaching standards and student progress, implementing improvement strategies where needed.
o Coordinate phase meetings and contribute to whole-school planning.
o To work with the English, Maths and Science leads and PSHE to promote core subject education.
o To work with the primary team to ensure therapeutic learning is delivered across the primary faculty.
