Graduate Trainee Design & Certification Engineer

Location: Doncaster Sheffield Airport

Hours: Full Time – Monday to Friday

About Us: 2Excel Aviation Ltd is a leading aviation services company. With a commitment to innovation and excellence, we deliver a wide range of aviation solutions to customers worldwide. As we continue to grow, we are looking for talented and ambitious graduates to join our team and play a key role in shaping the future of our engineering capability.

About The Role: We are currently seeking a Graduate Trainee Design & Certification Engineer to join our Design Organisation within our Capability Development department in Doncaster. This is an excellent opportunity for a recent graduate with a passion for aviation to begin their career in a dynamic and highly regulated engineering environment. Successful candidates will follow a structured, mentor‑led training programme, working alongside experienced Design Engineers and gaining exposure to live aircraft modification projects from day one. As experience develops, you will take on increasing responsibility, progressing towards independent working and readiness for promotion within approximately 24 months. During this period you will begin to specialise in a technical function (Electrical Systems, Structures, Airworthiness, Additive Manufacturing).

Contribute to both design and certification activities, gaining an understanding of the full aircraft modification lifecycle—from concept through to manufacture, installation, testing and approval.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the creation of design and certification data in accordance with the Design Organisation Handbook (DOH)
  • Assist in engineering design activities under the guidance of Lead Design Engineers (LDEs) and Engineering Project Leads (EPLs)
  • Contribute to technical documentation including reports, compliance documents, and certification records
  • Support analysis activities (e.g. stress, systems, safety assessments) as required
  • Maintain configuration control of design data

Engineering Processes

  • Develop and apply knowledge of Design Organisation procedures and software tools
  • Ensure all work is completed in line with approved processes and regulatory requirements
  • Provide feedback on process improvements, efficiencies, and best practices

Project & Operational Support

  • Support the day‑to‑day operation of the Design Organisation
  • Communicate progress, risks, and any resource challenges clearly to project leads
  • Assist with checking parts and engineering data for accuracy and compliance
  • Contribute to maintaining a safe, organised, and professional working environment

Cross‑Functional Exposure

  • Work collaboratively across Design, Production, Maintenance, Installation, and Flight Test teams
  • Support manufacturing and installation activities where required
  • Gain exposure to aircraft testing and real‑world implementation of engineering designs

Essential Skills & Behaviours

  • Degree (or expected degree) in Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering or a related discipline
  • Strong understanding of engineering fundamentals (e.g. mechanics, materials, thermodynamics, electrical systems)
  • Excellent attention to detail and problem‑solving skills
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • A proactive attitude and willingness to learn
  • Ability to follow processes and work within a regulated environment

Desirable

  • Familiarity with CAD software (e.g. SolidWorks, CATIA, AutoCAD)
  • Awareness of aviation regulations or certification processes
  • Relevant industry placement or internship experience
  • Experience with Additive Manufacturing

What We Offer

In return we can offer a generous salary, 25 days holiday per year from day one plus bank holidays, up to 6% matched Pension scheme, Group Life Insurance, Health and Wellbeing benefits including Private Health Care and an EAP, and much more.

Applicants must be able to demonstrate the Right to Work in the UK and be able to obtain a UK Security Clearance.

2Excel is committed to promoting equitable treatment, encouraging diversity, and embracing inclusion in our recruitment processes and among our workforces. In addition, we are proud to be recognised as a Disability Confident Employer.

Salary: £33,110 per year.

Job Type: Permanent - Full-time.
