Join us as a Scientist – Computational Physicist at our Farnborough site, where you will work on advanced electro‑optical modelling and imagery analysis alongside some of the most brilliant minds in science and engineering.
The Role
As a Scientist – Computational Physicist, you will play a key role in delivering electro‑optical and infrared (EO/IR) modelling, simulation and image processing capabilities that support critical defence programmes and future technology development.
Day‑to‑day, you’ll be involved in computational modelling, synthetic scene and target generation, imagery and video analysis, and algorithm development, supporting both laboratory‑based activities and field trials aligned to customer delivery.
Your responsibilities will include:
* Undertaking multiphysics and EO/IR signature modelling of vehicles, systems, components and materials
* Analysing experimental imagery and video data and correlating results with model predictions
* Developing synthetic scenes and target imagery across EO/IR wavebands of interest
* Designing, developing and optimising code and algorithms for modelling and image processing
* Delivering and leading technical EO/IR modelling tasks in line with contracted activity
* Producing high‑quality technical reports and contributing to proposals and capability development
Essential experience of the Scientist – Computational Physicist
* Strong understanding of electro‑optics and light‑matter interactions
* Experience of computational modelling, simulation or image processing in an EO/IR context
* Strong programming skills in MATLAB and Python
* Experience analysing imagery or video data and interpreting modelling results
* Ability to manage technical tasks, priorities and accurate technical records
* Strong written and verbal communication skills for reports and technical presentations
Essential qualifications for the Scientist – Computational Physicist
* Bachelor’s degree in Physics, Mathematics, Engineering or a related scientific discipline

This role is 37 hours per week based at Farnborough. Hybrid working patterns are available. Travel to other QinetiQ and customer sites will be expected.
