Consultant Physician in General Internal Medicine

Applications are invited for the Consultant in General Medicine in the Internal Medicine Division, based at St Richard's Hospital, part of the University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust. General Medicine is expected to grow in upcoming years; we seek a dynamic, motivated workforce to develop and improve services, build new pathways, and work with key stakeholders. This role attracts candidates with a specialist interest in General Internal Medicine or those keen to focus exclusively on it.
The incumbent ensures the best possible outcomes for patients while contributing to improving mortality, patient experience, length of stay, etc. The post will support community work and partner with system partners to prevent prolonged hospital admissions. The role involves working with a multidisciplinary team and physician colleagues across the Trust.
Main duties of the job
Support and develop the inpatient wards at St Richard's Hospital, collaborating with colleagues at other sites as required. The post holder will: support the GIM inpatient service; supervise the ward multidisciplinary team and other GIM wards as needed; have responsibility for inpatients at University Hospital Sussex at the relevant site, delivering daily ward input; provide cover for patients admitted under another paired consultant during colleague absences; provide education to the wider MDT as part of the GIM educational program; oversee general professional training of junior department members and contribute to training nurses and other staff; participate in the Postgraduate Medical Centre activities including medical and clinical audit. The on‑call commitment for the medical rota is 1 in 14, with 1 in 8 Saturdays and Sundays post‑take ward rounds and prospective cover.

Job responsibilities
Clinical duties include:
* Predominantly on an in‑patient General Medicine ward.
* Day‑to‑day inpatient care and supervision of junior medical staff.
* Opportunity to act as a clinical and educational supervisor.
* Support of Physicians Associates and development of alternative modes of patient care.
* Active contribution to internal medicine team meetings, service development, audit and governance.
* Participation in ongoing education programmes for junior doctors, GPs, and nurses.
* Keeping up to date with knowledge and skills via CPD, yearly appraisal, and revalidation.

Person Specification
Experience / Qualifications
* Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice.
* CCT in General (Internal) or equivalent (equivalence must be confirmed by GMC by date of AAC).
* Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register or eligibility for entry within 6 months of the date of the AAC.
* Higher Degree.
Clinical Skills and Experience
* General training in General Internal Medicine to specialist level or equivalent.
* Understanding of clinical risk management.
* High‑quality skills in general and acute medicine and ability to manage medical takes.
Knowledge
* Breadth of experience in and outside specialty.
Organisation and Planning
* Experience and ability to work in multi‑professional teams.
* Understanding of NHS / Clinical governance / Resource constraints.
* Evidence of managerial skills: achievements / courses attended.
Academic and Research
* Evidence of participation in audit.
