The Respiratory Physiology department at University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust (UHBW) is looking for two experienced Lead Physiologists to provide leadership to the Lung Function team and act as a source of clinical expertise for respiratory physiology.


Main duties of the job

As joint Lead of the Respiratory Physiology department at the University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust (UHBW) you will have responsibility for the provision and quality of all aspects of the Respiratory Physiology service for UHBW in conjunction with the Specialty Manager, Lead Clinical Scientist and Lead Consultant Physician. This would include the management and development of the Respiratory Physiology services, staff and facilities at the Trust. You will be pivotal in staff training for staff within the department and for external teams and students.

The post holders will provide professional leadership and act as a source of clinical expertise for respiratory physiology, while promoting change and identifying new opportunities for service delivery and prospects for improvement. They will be competent in performing and interpreting a wide range of simple and highly complex assessments in Lung Function and be skilled in the analysis and reporting of results. Participates in (and may initiate) quality assurance, audit and research and development programmes.

Qualifications

* MSc/BSc in Clinical Physiology (Respiratory) or PTP/STP or equivalent
* ARTP Part 1 & 2 or Practitioner Exam
* Eligible for RCCP, HCPC, AHCS membership or equivalent
* Evidence of CPD
* Work Based Assessor Training
* Teaching Course


Skills

* Able to work autonomously and is guided by principles and broad occupational policies or regulations
* Able to deal with exposure to distressing and/or emotional circumstances, with occasional exposure to highly distressing and emotional circumstances, which may include: Patients who have a rapidly deteriorating condition (including paediatric and older adult patients) and End-of-life and Palliative Care issues
* Able to deal with frequent exposure to unpleasant working conditions (body odour, sputum) with occasional exposure to hazards (verbal aggression)
* Able to undertake periods of frequent prolonged concentration with occasional intense concentration for advanced procedures and complex analysis of results
* Able to analyse and clinically interpret data from: a range of simple to highly complex specialist test procedures and lung function testing devices with a view to planning and implementing future treatment, where appropriate
* Able to analyse, interpret and handle complex or sensitive information, where empathic or reassurance skills are required and to communicate this to a wide range of people from consultants to patients to the general public and children, including those with sensory, physical or learning difficulties
* Highly developed physical skills, where accuracy and/or speed are essential, and may include manipulation of fine tools, obtaining arterial/capillary blood gases or the assembly of specific complex circuitry
* The post requires a combination of: frequent light physical effort (carrying equipment: 2 – 10kg); o occasional moderate physical effort (moving morbidly obese patients in wheelchairs); frequent standing, kneeling or sitting in a restricted position
* Excellent leadership skills
