Lead Sessional Instructional Assistant

Course Title: HIS268H1-F, L0101 Law and History

Course Description: The Federal Interpretation Act of Canada states that the ‘law is always speaking’. If the law is always speaking, then it must be speaking in present tense. But if it only speaks in present tense, does it have a past? How might we consider the field of law from different historical angles? This course will introduce students to different historical approaches to and uses of law. Using examples from a wide array of legal traditions (e.g. Common Law, Civil Law, Indigenous Law, Islamic Law), the course will help students gain a greater appreciation for the function, study, and development of law across different times and places.

Dates of Appointment: September 1, 2025 – December 31, 2025

Minimum Qualifications: Minimum MA in History or related discipline; Previous Head Instructional Assistant experience in this or a similar course. Experience supervising TAs. Knowledge of policies and procedures regarding student issues. Excellent knowledge of the subject matter.

Preferred qualifications: teaching experience in this or a similar course is preferred. Previous experience or training with Quercus is an asset.

Duties

Arranging and assigning tutorial hours. Liaising with individual TAs and course instructor/supervisor over any pedagogical, procedural and student issues arising during the session. Preparing and maintaining course materials. Marking essays/exams submitted on petition.

Estimated course enrolment: 300

Estimated hours per position: Approximately 50

Schedule: Mondays 13:00-15:00 In-person lectures

Tutorials: Mondays 12:00-13:00, 15:00-16:00, 16:00-17:00; Tuesdays 10:00-11:00, 11:00-12:00, 12:00-13:00, 13:00-14:00, 14:00-15:00, 15:00-16:00, 17:00-18:00

Rate of Pay: $$54.27 per hour plus 4% vacation pay
