This is a one -year fixed term consultant post pending substantive recruitment

We are seeking to appoint a dynamic individual within the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology at Maidstone & Tunbridge well Hospitals.

This is a locum consultant post, fixed term for 12 months in Obstetrics and Gynaecology based at Tunbridge Wells Hospital pending a substantive appointment. This post is in response to expansion of maternity services, supporting our Urogynaecology service and recovery of gynaecology services. The candidate will be expected to integrate within the team of existing Consultants and to provide a complete Obstetrics and Gynaecology Service.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicantwillworkon bothsites oftheTrustprovidingemergencycover as well as on call cover. We have a weekday hot week on call between 8-6 pm and the successful applicant will take part in this and an equal share of the 1:17-night time on call Rota.

Working for our organisation

The Trust consists of the Tunbridge Wells Hospital and Maidstone Hospital and serves a population of approximately 500,000 people, living in the West Kent and East Sussex areas. The Trust also manages the Kent Cancer Centre at Maidstone and Canterbury.

Service provision for Obstetrics is based at the Tunbridge Wells hospital with Birth Centres adjacent to Maidstone Hospital and in Crowborough. We deliver approximately 5800 babies per annum across the three units. Gynaecology inpatients and most emergencies are treated at Tunbridge Wells Hospital. Ambulatory Gynaecology and Outpatient services are at both hospitals.

All applicants should be fully registered with the General Medical Council, hold a Licence to Practice and be on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT on the date of interview.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The job plan for the post will be flexible to support the service’s reset and recovery plans and may be altered dependent on the skills of the person appointed and their experience. This will be the responsibility of the Clinical Director and the Head of Service.

Gynaecology commitments would include a general gynaecology clinic and Urogynaecology clinic with a dedicated session of MDT. A weekly operating list is included in the job plan and where necessary support for operating development provided. In addition to this high-risk antenatal clinic, Labour ward, caesarean section lists, emergency gynae cover during day time hours will be incorporated into the job plan.

Qualifications and skills

Essential criteria

1. Full GMC registration
2. MRCOG or appropriate specialist qualification
3. CCT in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (or within 6 months of AAC) or equivalent
4. Advanced Labour ward SITM or equivalent
5. Urogynaecology SITM or equivalent

Desirable criteria

6. Higher medical degree
7. Urogynecology subspecialty training
8. Gynecological USS competence

Clinical Experience, Knowledge

Essential criteria

9. Evidence of competence in gynaecological surgery for benign disease and emergency gynaecology surgery
10. Evidence of competency in outpatient hysteroscopy
11. Evidence of competence in undertaking C-sections
12. Evidence of competency in managing and treating emergency gynaecology cases.
13. Ability to take independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients
14. Evidence of experience working within a multidisciplinary team

Desirable criteria

15. ALSO, PROMPT or MOET instructor
16. Training in breaking bad news or equivalent raining
17. Experience of clinical governance
18. Clinical research in the fields of special interest
19. Demonstrate ideas for innovation and research
20. Experience in Clinical Audit and Quality Improvement
21. Willingness to contribute to the TOP service

Clinical Skills and Ability

22. Ability to organise and prioritise workload effectively
23. Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients both obstetrics and gynaecology
24. Proven ability to work as a member of a multidisciplinary team and display leadership

25. Management qualification
26. Evidence of authorship of clinical guidelines at a local or national level.

Teaching and training experience

27. Experience of teaching junior medical staff and other healthcare professionals
28. Develops, supports and motivates junior staff

29. Courses or qualification in medical education
30. Understanding of how to provide effective and open feedback

Teaching/Audit/Quality Improvement/ Research

Essential criteria

42. Experience of teaching medical and midwifery and nursing staff
43. Experience of supervising junior medical staff, midwifery and nursing staff
44. Evidence of undertaking an audit, service review or guideline or quality improvement project which improved patient care.

Desirable criteria

45. Formal training in teaching e.g. training the trainers course
46. Experience of managing emergency drills training
47. Publications in peer reviewed journal
48. Experience of giving presentations at local/regional / national level
