Overview

Associate Head for the Built Environment – a strategic leadership role within the School of the Arts. The incumbent will lead the development, implementation and delivery of a new portfolio of programmes across the Built Environment, working closely with industry, professional bodies and the university’s strategic plans.


Responsibilities

* Provide high‑level engagement with employers and professional bodies to shape an industry‑embedded, professionally aligned curriculum.
* Recruit and lead a team of academics to deliver the new Built Environment provision.
* Secure appropriate technical, IT and infrastructural support for the programme.
* Act as a member of the School Academic Leadership Team, advising the Head of School on staffing, recruitment, space utilisation, resource needs, external partnerships and internationalisation.
* Build and sustain a high‑performing academic community, combining experienced academics and industry practitioners, fostering a collaborative, inclusive and delivery‑focused culture.
* Lead by example as an active researcher and as an educator, delivering teaching in at least one programme area.
* Facilitate clear communication across teams, motivating colleagues to achieve excellence.
* Advocate for the Built Environment portfolio within the university’s strategic plans.


Qualifications

* Practitioner expertise in at least one branch of the Built Environment (e.g., architecture, quantity surveying, construction project management, building service engineering).
* Appreciation and understanding of a broad range of related subject areas.
* Desirable: research expertise and a doctorates, with a strong portfolio of scholarship and teaching innovation.
* Experience in higher education and new programme development, including programme and budget management, leadership and strategic thinking.
* Strong network across academic and professional services, with a history of collaborative partnership building.
* Effective communicator, able to manage diverse stakeholders and deliver results in a campus environment.
