Instrumentation Field Service Engineer role at United Utilities
Overview
As an Instrumentation Field Service Engineer, you’ll play a key part in keeping assets running smoothly by delivering expert maintenance and technical support to the Production team. You’ll work in a fast-paced, modern maintenance environment, contributing to proactive, planned, and reactive support while helping ensure compliance with company, statutory, and regulatory standards and protecting the environment. You’ll also have the opportunity to contribute to capital and operational projects, ensuring assets are built with maintenance and performance in mind from day one. This role offers a mix of independence and teamwork, with some solo work and close collaboration with a supportive team.
Role details
* Salary: £38,462 (one core skill: Electrical/Mechanical/Instrumentation). If you have both disciplines, salary is £44,320.

Responsibilities
* Deliver high-quality instrumentation maintenance and installation services to keep systems running effectively.
* Diagnose and fix faults to ensure instrumentation and systems operate at peak performance.
* Carry out planned maintenance to prevent issues before they arise; maintain a proactive approach to asset reliability.
* Ensure full compliance with Health & Safety regulations and internal policies.
* Manage budgets and provide accurate asset performance data for corporate reporting.
* Provide insights to drive smarter decisions and address recurring maintenance issues by analyzing root causes and implementing long-term solutions.
Essential Skills & Experience
* Time-served apprentice or equivalent with academic qualifications.
* Full UK driving licence (essential due to mobile nature of the role).
* Field service experience in electrical maintenance or engineering, preferably in a field-based or utilities environment.
* Fault-finding expertise across electrical systems, controls, and instrumentation.
* Knowledge of flow, level, and measurable instruments; familiarity with maintaining, calibrating, and servicing equipment in water/wastewater or similar industries.
* Health & Safety awareness with safe systems of work, risk assessments, and permit-to-work experience.
* Team player who can work independently while communicating effectively with on-site teams and contractors.
