Overview
We invite applications for a Graduate Civil Engineer position that will become part of the Environment Agency’s Graduate Training Scheme. This four‑to five‑year programme will give you hands‑on experience and the skills you need to become a future leader within the Agency.

You will gain a holistic understanding of flood defence engineering projects and work with specialists in Modelling, Forecasting, Natural Flood Management, National Fisheries Service, and Health and Safety.
* Flexible pathways – the programme tailors your journey to your interests and development needs. Whether you are drawn to geotechnics, hydraulics or the logistics of managing engineering projects, we will craft a learning path that fits.
* Learning & development – accredited by the Institution of Civil Engineers, the programme guides you toward Incorporated (IEng) and Chartered (CEng) status.
Responsibilities
As a Graduate Civil Engineer you will:
* Collaborate with stakeholders across the Agency to deliver flood defence projects.
* Support asset management activities, strategic planning and site supervision.
* Participate in incident response duties and continue your training throughout the scheme.
Qualifications and Skills
You must hold an accredited BEng or, ideally, an MEng degree in Civil Engineering (or equivalent) accredited by the ICE. You should be proactive, adaptable and self‑motivated, comfortable working collaboratively with a range of stakeholders, and keen to make the most of the opportunities the scheme offers. A full UK driving licence is required within six months of starting the role.
Benefits
Hybrid working arrangements and flexible work patterns are offered. Pay is Step 2 (£31,452) for BEng graduates and Step 3 (£32,237) for MEng graduates. Training, mentoring and ample support networks form part of the programme.
Application Process
Shortlisting will take place in January 2026, with interviews in February/March 2026 and successful candidates starting in September 2026. All applications must fully populate the Higher Education qualifications section of the online form; CVs are not processed.
