Clinical Editor - BMJ Surgery
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join BMJ Group as a part-time Clinical Editor on a new journal, BMJ Surgery, launching in 2025. The new journal will expand BMJ Group’s presence in this important area, complementing its existing titles in adjacent specialties.
The successful candidate will work with the Editor-in-Chief and BMJ Group Publishing staff to establish the new journal and develop its reach, impact and influence internationally.
Responsibilities include
1. Work with the Editor-in-Chief and BMJ Group to develop and maintain a relevant and coherent editorial strategy and vision for the journal
2. Maintain and ensure the integrity of the review process and publishing ethics, providing guidance to authors, reviewers and editors as appropriate
3. Support the Editor-in-Chief to recruit and manage editorial team members in line with BMJ Group’s EDI policy
4. Train and support editorial board members and associate editors
5. Add value by commissioning editorials, reviews, educational material and online content, and seeking opportunities to publish topic collections and supplements
6. Attend editorial meetings to discuss manuscripts in process, as well as problematic or controversial editorial content
7. Work with the publishing and editorial production teams to move content smoothly through the editorial process
8. Use and report data and analytics to inform decisions about editorial strategy
9. Be an ambassador for the journal, taking part in external outreach, conferences and meetings to promote the journal and develop relationships
10. Work collaboratively with the editorial team of BMJ Connections Surgery, an open access companion journal, to facilitate the transfer of suitable manuscripts rejected from BMJ Surgery
Experience & Qualifications
We would like the post holder to possess experience in all listed areas, but the relative experience in each will vary by individual.
Experience (essential)
11. Clinical and/or research experience to inform editorial decision-making and ensure relevance of articles.
12. Experience in critical appraisal of evidence to inform decision-making.
13. Experience in writing for a clinical audience
14. Experience of peer review process in publishing.
Experience (desirable)
15. Editorial experience on a medical journal including commissioning, editing, and writing content.
16. Experience of writing and editing content for healthcare professionals.
17. Experience of working in a matrix, hybrid environment.
18. Experience of working with ScholarOne (or other online content management systems).
19. Experience of working with international editorial teams.
Qualification (essential)
20. Degree in Medicine or Bachelor of Science
Qualification (desirable)
21. Postgraduate qualification related to surgery or evidence-based healthcare
Part-time role (0.4 FTE, 2 days per week). Days are flexible and can be agreed with the successful candidate, but we require consistent availability for two days each week.
