Offer description

Administration

Keep an up-to-date diary of your Judge’s court sittings/visits/meetings, maintain robes and library, coordinate visits, assist visitors and other office functions. Domestic duties may include tea/coffee preparation, lunch collection, washing up, dry cleaning and other ad‑hoc duties as agreed. Transport large court bundles; trolleys are provided but lifting will be required. When judges go on circuit, clerks transport books, bundles, files, computers, robes and other judicial requirements.


Communication and Liaison

* Manage the smooth running of the judge’s court commitments in London or on circuit.
* Communicate by telephone, e‑mail and correspondence to resolve queries and requests.
* Regular liaison with judges, senior figures, litigants, members of the public, jurors, court and tribunal users, representatives of other agencies and organisations.
* Act as the first point of contact between the judge and others.


Decision Making

Make decisions regarding changing priorities as they occur, without reference to the judge, and work on your own initiative.


Skilled Worker Visa

This role is not eligible for new Skilled Worker visas under current immigration rules. From 22 July 2025, the Government introduced changes to the Skilled Worker visa route. The department cannot consider sponsoring you for this role unless you have held a Skilled Worker visa prior to those changes. If you have held a Skilled Worker visa continuously, please raise this during your vetting checks and eligibility will be assessed in accordance with the immigration rules and transitional provisions. If you have not held a Skilled Worker visa prior to the changes, you will need to consider your options for obtaining and/or maintaining your right to work in the UK in light of these changes. Successful applicants must ensure they have and maintain the legal right to live and work in the Civil Service and in the United Kingdom.


Working Arrangements & Further Information

Office location and working hours: Flexible working hours – limited flexibility to meet business needs, approval required by the judge, line manager or senior judge’s clerks manager. Hybrid working may be available, but the role requires a minimum of 60% of working time in an office. Minimum of 37 hours per week (standard full‑time). For national advertising, successful candidates will be appointed to the nearest viable office to their home postcode and appropriate pay scale.


Qualities and Experience

* Experience in administrative or clerical support in a court, tribunal or other legal setting.
* Strong organisational skills, ability to manage multiple priorities.
* Excellent communication skills – telephone, e‑mail, written correspondence.
* Capability to work independently and make decisions.
* Discretion, tact, courtesy and diplomacy; ability to handle confidential matters.
