Chief Executive of Nottingham Counselling Service

Job Purpose: To enhance and uphold the quality of counselling and professional practice at Nottingham Counselling Service (NCS), ensuring that therapeutic interventions delivered by counsellors contribute effectively to the psychological health, wellbeing, and functioning of service users. Key Responsibilities:
• To work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team to broaden the range of therapeutic approaches offered to individuals with complex needs, including those presenting with long-term, enduring issues or those experiencing emotional distress.
• To ensure the ethical, professional, and evidence-informed delivery of counselling services to clients referred or self referred to NCS.
• To support the clinical development, supervision, and performance of counsellors practising at NCS, fostering reflective practice and continuous professional growth
Main Duties and Responsibilities: Supervision and Clinical Quality
• Provide individual clinical supervision to volunteer and trainee counsellors, supporting ethical practice and emotional resilience.
• Facilitate group supervision in line with NCS standards, ensuring regular attendance and reflective clinical dialogue. • Monitor caseloads, risk, performance, and adherence to NCS policies, the Volunteer Agreement, and the BACP Ethical Framework for the Counselling Professions.
• Provide supervision to trainee and early career counsellors/psychotherapists/therapists/practitioners.
• Ensure supervisees are informed and aligned with NCS clinical expectations and governance procedures.
Data, Risk and Performance Monitoring
• Oversee counsellors' use of the CORE outcome monitoring system and ensure client notes are maintained according to NCS standards.
• Respond to Safeguarding concerns in line with the NCS Safeguarding Policy
Client Access and Assessment
• Conduct pre-assessments and initial assessments for new clients referred or self-referred to NCS if required.
• Make clinically sound decisions regarding the suitability of clients for ongoing therapy at NCS.
• Support the effective management of the client waiting list, balancing client needs with counsellor availability.
Development, Recruitment and Governance
• Contribute to the delivery of NCS’s CPD Programme and in-house training initiatives.
• Participate in the recruitment, induction, and monitoring of new counsellors.
• Assist in the allocation of supervisees to group or individual supervision, considering availability and clinical fit.
• Act as a representative of NCS in meetings with stakeholders and external partners, maintaining professional standards.
Teamwork and Organisanisational Development
Work collaboratively across the NCS clinical and administrative teams to support service delivery and day-to-day operations.
• Attend regular line management sessions with the Clinical Lead.
• Participate in regular staff and team meetings.
Essential Qualifications
• Undergraduate Degree (BSc/BA) or Postgraduate Degree (MA/MSc) in Counselling, Psychotherapy.
• Post-qualification training in CBT Clinical Supervision, or substantial experience of delivering clinical supervision to trainee and newly qualified counsellors/psychotherapists.
• Accredited (or eligible for Accreditation and willing to submit their application prior to starting in post) with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), or the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) • BABP Accredited CBT Practitioner.
• Five + years post-qualified practice in delivering Counselling/Psychotherapy.
• Five + years of delivering counselling/psychotherapy to children, young people, families and adults.
• Experience of providing supervision to counsellors working with complex mental health issues.
• Experience of supervising trainee counsellors, including knowledge of placement expectations and professional boundaries.
• Experience of working with those from Racialised Communities.
• Experience of working with those from socially disadvantaged backgrounds.
• Experience of working with outcome measures (e.g., CORE system) and data-informed practice.
• Experience of safeguarding, ethical decision-making, and professional standards in counselling.
• Experience of undertaking Assessments.
• Five + years post-qualified practice in delivering Counselling/Psychotherapy.
• Five + years of delivering counselling/psychotherapy to children, young people, families and adults.
• Experience of providing supervision to counsellors working with complex mental health issues.
• Experience of supervising trainee counsellors, including knowledge of placement expectations and professional boundaries.
• Experience of working with those from Racialised Communities.
