New Victoria Hospital

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is one of the largest healthcare systems in the United Kingdom, employing approximately 40,000 staff across a wide range of clinical and non-clinical professions and roles. The role:

The role of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde PPSU is to:

1. Ensure that patients derive maximum benefit and minimum harm from their medicines
2. Provide a single system approach to pharmacy and prescribing policy issues, including integration of systems within pharmacy and prescribing support functions
3. Support clinicians in their provision of high quality, effective and efficient pharmaceutical care to individual patients at whatever their point of need in their healthcare journey
4. Provide prescribers and managers with high quality, timeous information, analysis and advice to assist them to deliver effective prescribing management
5. Ensure that medicines are purchased, stored, dispensed and prescribed as cost effectively as possible

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:

Permanent, Full time

New Victoria Hospital

Shift Pattern - 8.45 17.00 Monday to Thursday 8.45 - 16.30 Friday. (45mins for lunch)

Key responsibilities:

6. Manage stock control systems, including checks, rotation, expiry monitoring, and discrepancies
7. Dispense and prepare medicines, including highcost items and clinical trials
8. Train and support Pharmacy staff
9. Action and report stock discrepancies; liaise on highcost medicine issues
10. Coordinate medicine recalls
11. Support discharge by accurately dispensing checked prescriptions
12. Check kardexes and order missing items
13. Complete environmental monitoring (fridges, freezers, air pressures)
14. Comply with legislation, ethics, and NHSGGC standards
15. Communicate effectively across Pharmacy and wider team
16. Participate in PDP, KSF, and ongoing development
17. Train and support new staff; participate in weekend/holiday rotas
18. Prepare, clean, and maintain equipment
19. Check components for product preparation
20. Overlabel and prepack medicines; supervise processes
21. Act as robotic system expert
22. Complete audit and statistical tasks
23. Prepare products and complete transfer processes per SOPs
24. Perform required validations Generate worksheets/labels and complete transcription/formulary checks
25. Fill liquid nitrogen containers where appropriate
26. Act as PDC Service Lead and escalate issues
27. Manage vaccine supply and campaigns
28. Provide patient education
29. Take medication histories and perform controlled drug checks after training
30. Follow formulary policy and participate in governance/audit
31. Maintain communication with ward staff and community pharmacies
32. Dispense and prepare medicines per GMP, QA, QC, COSHH, H&S, and SOPs
33. Perform inprocess checks on others work
34. Maintain intrathecal training
35. Update SOPs under senior direction
36. Participate in clinical trial dispensing and aseptic activities
37. Liaise with Portfolio Pharmacists/Technicians to ensure consistent trial services
38. Manage technical aspects of clinical trials:

Dispensing

Accountability records

Trial files and documentation

Temperature/expiry monitoring

Ordering

Disposal/destruction

39. Liaise with Research Staff
40. Work to GCP, EU directives, and SOPs
41. Maintain documentation and safe systems of work
42. Conduct environmental monitoring and remedial actions
43. Participate in audits and workload statistics
44. Perform final accuracy checks on prescriptions and assembled items

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:

Essential

45. UK Registered Pharmacy Technician (General Pharmaceutical Council .)
46. Completed current GPhC approved competency and knowledge based qualifications e.g. S/NVQ Pharmacy Level 3 and NC Pharmaceutical Sciences and a qualifying period of work experience.
47. Good IT Skills including MS Office Word and Excel
48. Ability to communicate in clear spoken English and effective written and verbal communication
49. A commitment to participate in ongoing relevant training and Continual Professional Development (CPD)
50. Experience of interacting with people in a variety of situations
51. Ability to organise daily tasks using own initiative
52. Ability to work to set procedures
53. Stock management experience
54. Ability to work as part of a team

Desirable

55. A commitment to achieving an accredited accuracy checking qualification
56. Experience of supervising/training/mentoring staff
