The Biomedical Science Assistant role is part‑time in the Blood Sciences department at Barnsley Hospital Site. You will support Biomedical Scientists by carrying out pre‑analytical processing of samples, managing clinical records, and assisting with various laboratory duties.

Main duties
* Pre‑analytical processing of samples – receipt, preparation and processing, storage, retrieval and disposal of biological material in accordance with procedures.
* Respond to direct queries from medical staff, nursing staff and other service users, including telephone enquiries, and take appropriate action.
* Maintain high scientific and technical standards and promote relevant education and training.
* Adhere to Trust and departmental policies and maintain accurate clinical records, including input and interrogation of test results.
* Supervise, organise, allocate work and, where required, train less experienced staff in the area of responsibility.
Person specification
Education and qualifications
* GCSE (or equivalent) in Maths and English at level C/4 or above, or level 2 qualification such as NVQ, apprenticeship, or some laboratory experience.
Experience
* Ability to follow and work to Standard Operating Procedures and policy.
* Experience of simple laboratory techniques.
* Ability to work with colleagues to improve and develop working practices.
* Previous NHS laboratory experience.
Skills and knowledge
* Keyboard and basic IT skills.
* Awareness of Health & Safety issues.
* Effective written and oral communication skills.
