Overview
Join the Chemicals Surveillance and Emerging Risks team within the Chemicals Programme, part of the Environment and Business Directorate. You will influence national strategy and deliver smarter, more effective environmental protection focusing on chemicals in water. The role may contribute to the chemicals component of the Price Review programme, the Chemicals Investigation Programme, and ensuring chemical risks are addressed through permit reviews and regulatory innovation. Responsibilities
* Lead development of our chemical strategy for 2030–2035 through the Price Review programme.
* Ensure effective delivery of AMP8 and AMP9.
* Review high risk permitted activities.
* Influence national plans through collaboration with Defra, the water industry, and other stakeholders.
* Provide technical leadership across teams, mentor colleagues, and promote innovation.
* Translate evidence into action to deliver environmental outcomes.
* Possibly take online management responsibilities to support growth and development of team members.
Qualifications
* Essential experience:
o Degree or equivalent in environmental science, policy, or related fields
o Understanding of the water industry planning, regulation and/or permitting
o Strong stakeholder engagement and relationship-building skills, including with government and industry
o Strategic thinking and data analysis skills in environmental planning or water quality
o Excellent communication skills to translate technical information into clear policy
o Leadership in projects, programmes, or people with a collaborative and inclusive approach
o Strong organisational skills and ability to manage competing priorities
* Desirable:
o Awareness of environmental risks posed by chemicals and regulations
o Membership of a relevant professional body
Working arrangements
Dispersed team working via MS Teams with occasional travel for face-to-face meetings, usually in Birmingham or Bristol. The role is national with flexible working location; some travel and overnights will be required. You will be based in an EA office.
