The Opportunity
Due to continued expansion and an increasing portfolio of high-profile nuclear projects, our client is seeking a highly organised and motivated Radiation Protection Consultant to join their expert Radiation Protection team. You’ll play a pivotal role supporting the Nuclear Radiation Protection Team Lead and senior colleagues, ensuring the highest standards of radiological safety and compliance across major operational and design projects.
This is an exciting opportunity to lead technical work, contribute to the development of graduate trainees, and work closely with a wide range of technical specialists — from safety case and human factors to waste management and environmental teams. Your duties and responsibilities will be:
* Acting as a technical expert for Radiation Protection on major customer projects
* Supporting delivery of radiation protection advice to multidisciplinary teams
* Producing and coordinating radiological documentation including Normal Dose Uptake Assessments, Radiological Zoning, ALARP Assessments, and compliance statements
* Providing competent guidance on radiological safety and ensuring legislative compliance
* Working collaboratively with Safety Case, Human Factors, and other technical disciplines
* Applying company processes and maintaining up-to-date knowledge of UK RP legislation
* Supporting the work and development of graduate trainees
* Managing the delivery of allocated tasks against cost and schedule
* Ensuring adequate review, verification, and approval of deliverables
* Feeding back lessons learned to enhance future project performance
You will have the following qualifications & experience:
* Degree in a STEM discipline or equivalent industrial experience
* RPA 2000 Certified Radiation Protection Adviser (RPA) – Essential
* Proven ability to lead technical teams
* In-depth understanding of Ionising Radiations Regulation 2017 and associated Code of Practice
It’s great if you also have the following
* Strong communication and technical writing skills
* Knowledge of nuclear site licence compliance arrangements
* Understanding of ONR Safety Assessment Principles
* Familiarity with legislation such as REPPIR 2019, EPR 2016, and IAEA SSR-6
* Experience designing new nuclear processes or facilities
* Prior work interfacing with safety case and multidisciplinary engineering teams
* Awareness of risks during design, operation, and decommissioning phases
The setting for the role
You’ll spend approximately 2–3 days per week on-site, supporting key client projects within both civil and defence nuclear sectors. The successful candidate must be willing and able to obtain necessary security clearances (potentially up to Developed Vetting).
