Overview

Applications are invited for a temporary, part-time (40% FTE), 24 months teaching cover Lectureship in Microbiology in the School of Environmental and Natural Sciences. The successful candidate will be a motivated Lecturer (Teaching and Scholarship, T&S) who will contribute to microbiology teaching at undergraduate level. They will join an active T&S team passionate about quality teaching and pastoral support. Applicants should have a PhD (or near to completion) in a microbiology-related area and have enthusiasm for teaching and enhancing the student experience. We particularly welcome candidates working in the areas of virology, mycology, bacteriology, microbial ecology, and medical microbiology. The successful candidate will be expected to undertake teaching in classroom and laboratory settings. This role will be located on campus at Bangor with duties discussed with candidates. The University’s botanic garden at Treborth and the research farm at Henfaes provide facilities for field and lab teaching, and overseas field course options may be offered to Florida, India, and Spain.


Purpose of the Job

This temporary Lecturer in Microbiology (Teaching and Scholarship) will cover a staff member undertaking a 2-year Royal Society APEX award with teaching buyout. The sections of modules the candidate is expected to cover include: Practical skills for Biologists (laboratory-based practical on Gram staining), Principles of Life (virology lecture), Microbiology (virology lectures), Environmental Issues (report feedback, interviewing students on their reports), Parasites and pathogens (viruses, bacteria, fungi and protozoa lectures and a laboratory practical), and tutorial groups. We are seeking someone who can get up to speed quickly and contribute enthusiastically and flexibly to undergraduate teaching.


Main Duties and Responsibilities

* Deliver lectures and a laboratory-based practical for Practical Skills for Biologists. This is a first-year 20-credit module running in Semester 1.
* Deliver lectures on Virology for Principles of Life. This is a first-year 20-credit module running in Semester 1.
* Support introductory lectures and carry out interviews with students for Environmental Issues. This is a third-year 10 or 20-credit module running in Semester 1.
* Deliver lectures on viruses, bacteria, fungi and protozoa and a laboratory-based practical (two repetitions) for Parasites and Pathogens. This is a third-year 20-credit module running in Semester 1.
* Deliver lectures on virology for Microbiology. This is a second-year 20-credit module running in Semester 2.
* Act as pastoral and academic tutor to undergraduate students.
* Supervise final-year dissertation projects on topics related to microbiology and bacteriophages.
* Contribute to the development, delivery, and quality assurance of the undergraduate curricula.
* Maintain an excellent standard of teaching as indicated by peer observation and student feedback.
* Undertake assessment and provide feedback to students as required.
* Work collaboratively, sharing good practice with colleagues within the School and College.


Management and Administration

* Develop and coordinate modules and programmes as required.
* Maintain an up-to-date record of performance and participate in the performance review process.
* Attend relevant board and examination meetings.
* Carry out other teaching, management and administrative duties as specified by the Head of School.

* Participate in performance review and development activities.

Person Specification

Qualifications/Training

* Essential: PhD (or equivalent) in a microbiology-related area, or near completion.

Desirable: PGCertHE or equivalent, or recognised by HEA as a Fellow; commitment to equality and environmental sustainability; awareness of Welsh language policies where applicable.
