Overview
This job is with NUH Health Trust. The role focuses on contracts management for clinical research, working with internal teams, external collaborators, and industry partners to facilitate efficient research contracting while protecting NUH interests.
Responsibilities
* Manage and prioritise a substantial, varied and complex workload, handling conflicting expectations of internal and external parties, while responding sensitively to all requirements.
* Liaise with and negotiate contractual terms on contracts with senior research staff (external and internal), academic and non-commercial collaborators, pharmaceutical companies (domestic and foreign) and Contract Research Organisations (CROs).
* Develop relationships with NUH clinical researchers and external research contracts specialists to facilitate effective working relationships and an efficient contracts management process.
* Use initiative, judgement, creativity and pragmatism in negotiating agreements to enable timely opening of research projects, ensuring terms are fair for all parties while protecting NUH.
* Contribute to development and implementation of procedures and systems relating to research contracting activity, including standard documentation, SOPs and contract templates.
* Work with Research & Innovation teams to deliver a timely, customer-focused and integrated research contracts service.
* Escalate contract terms outside NUH’s standard obligations to the R&I Legal Services Manager or R&I Senior Leadership Team.
* Keep researchers and external stakeholders updated on contract progress and ensure principal investigators are aware of responsibilities and any contractual/financial terms.
* Stay abreast of developments related to clinical research and contract law, including policy and legislation changes.
* Ensure contracts are fully executed, recorded and stored for all new projects.
* Protect NUH’s interests, mitigate risk and reduce liabilities in research contracts where possible.
* Ensure Trust obligations under research contracts are clearly documented, monitored and followed up.
* Identify potential legal issues in research studies in relation to the Clinical Trials Directive, Data Protection Act 2018, UK GDPR, Human Tissue Act 1998 and related frameworks.
* Engage in training programmes aligned with the needs of the Research Contracts Manager role and NUH Research & Innovation.
* Assist the R&I Legal Services Manager when required.

Training & Qualifications
Essential criteria
* Professional knowledge of contract law acquired through a degree or professional experience within a relevant organisation
* Suitable research contracts management experience within a relevant organisation
* Professional knowledge of clinical research, relevant legislation, contract drafting and reviewing
Experience
Essential criteria
* Experience of working with research contracts and legal agreements in an NHS clinical research setting, including review, drafting and amendment of such agreements
* Knowledge of medicines for human use (clinical trials) regulations; Data Protection Act; GDPR, Human Tissue Act; Research Governance Framework
* Experience and knowledge of negotiation strategies
* Knowledge of current national systems and structures for the approval, management and monitoring of clinical research in the NHS
Desirable criteria
* Knowledge and/or experience of Intellectual Property Law, including patent law, law of confidence, copyright law, its identification, protection and exploitation
* Experience in developing, implementing and following standard procedures
