We are seeking to appoint a highly skilled and experienced teacher to our supportive, hardworking and successful Sensory Team. The team is part of Nottinghamshire County Council’s Schools and Families Specialist Services (SFSS) and consists of Qualified Teachers of the Visually Impaired, Qualified Teachers of the Deaf, Specialist Teaching Assistants, Habilitation Specialists, and a Sensory Technician.
The post is open to qualified teachers, including those without the mandatory qualification in teaching children and young people with a visual impairment. Successful candidates who do not hold the mandatory qualification, will however be required to attain it through the successful completion of an appropriately recognised course. Funding and release time to undertake the qualification will be provided by SFSS. Staff in training are expected to carry a caseload (albeit reduced) during their training. Further details about the accredited courses and the providers of this training can be found at:
There is also an expectation that through the course, teachers will obtain a knowledge of Braille at level 2 standard and be able to teach this to pupils as appropriate.
Whilst a Teaching and Learning Responsibility (TLR) at point 2(a) would be payable to successful candidates who already hold the mandatory qualification, this allowance would not be payable to staff until they have successfully completed the accredited training, which is scheduled to take 2 years.
You will useyour knowledge, skills, and experience to develop and deliver effective strategies/interventions aimed at improving outcomes for children and young people with a vision impairment from birth to 19 years. You willwork at a variety of levels, using positive and inclusive approaches to provide support and advice to families, settings, and school staff. Support from dedicated specialist teaching assistants ensures that a flexibility of approaches can be offered. You will be expected to be very flexible and will need to be highly motivated and have a good understanding of the National Curriculum across all phases.
The post carries an authorised car user allowance.
