Consultant in Paediatric Palliative Medicine

The closing date is 27 July 2025

Permanent | 2 roles available - 10PAs and 5PAs

Sheffield Children's Hospital, in partnership with the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw ICB, is pleased to announce two new Consultant posts in Paediatric Palliative Care. These roles form part of a wider regional development strategy, including a third post linked to general paediatrics, to provide a total of 20 PAs of additional consultant time to enhance paediatric palliative care services across South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire.

These new consultant positions will be hosted by Sheffield Children's NHS Foundation Trust, delivering specialist and holistic palliative care to children and young people (up to age 19). The posts aim to support and strengthen palliative care provision both within the hospital and in the wider community.

About You: We are looking for compassionate and experienced clinicians with a background in Paediatric Palliative Medicine. You will be GMC-registered with a licence to practise. A commitment to collaboration, education, and regional service development is essential, as is the ability to travel across the region.

Main duties of the job

You will report to the Associate Medical Director, and your responsibilities will include:

Provide clinical leadership in developing a regional tier of specialist paediatric palliative care

Deliver high-quality care to children and families at home, in hospital, and in respite facilities such as Ryegate House

Collaborate with district hospital teams, the ICB, and Bluebell Wood Children's Hospice

Support local paediatric clinicians to deliver palliative care, closer to home.

Work with haematology and oncology teams to support symptom management and holistic care

Support end-of-life care planning, including facilitating preferred place of death

Please note that Sheffield Children's uplift pay to meet the Real Living Wage, which is £12.60 per hour.

Person Specification


Qualification

* MBBS or equivalent
* MRCPCH or equivalent
* Level 3 safeguarding training
* Diploma in Paediatric Palliative medicine
* Higher degree e.g. MSc/PhD relevant to the subspecialty


Training

* CCT Paediatric Palliative Medicine or equivalent (or within 6 months of obtaining)


Clinical Experience

* Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in paediatric palliative medicine in hospice, hospital and community settings including complex symptom management, ethical clinical decision making, advance care planning and end of life care.
* Experience in organisation of clinical audit and medical education to enhance service provision and education provision


Audit / Research

* Competence in clinical audit
* Able to initiate and carry out medical research projects


Management

* Knowledge of clinical governance
* Experience of management
* Specific management training


Other qualities

* Ability to work as a team with professional colleagues from both medical and other disciplines
