Overview
Intelligence Research Officer for the National Environmental Crime Unit (NECU) within the Environment Agency. The Environment Agency aims to be an intelligence-led organisation, and this role supports investigations by developing, accessing, and delivering actionable intelligence products to inform decision making. Environmental crime is a strategic priority, with high-profile attention from the public, media, and stakeholders.
Responsibilities
* Proactively develop and access intelligence from a range of sources to inform decision making.
* Produce actionable intelligence products for internal customers and support investigations to prioritise and drive interventions to remove unlawful operators from the waste regime.
* Collaborate with intelligence professionals within the Environment Agency’s Intelligence & Partnerships department to provide intelligence assessments and products.
* Respond to incidents as part of an incident role, with potential additional pay and full training; provide business continuity support during incidents and adapt working arrangements as needed.
* Support flexible and inclusive working patterns; provide information on preferred working arrangements in applications.
What you will do
Responding to incidents is a central part of the role; you will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident.
Location and Working Arrangements
Location is flexible with a mix of home and office working. Travel to Birmingham and Sheffield offices may be required on occasions. Interviews are expected to be conducted via Microsoft Teams in September 2025.
Team and Department
You will be part of the Environment Agency’s Intelligence & Partnerships department, working with intelligence professionals to provide intelligence products and assessments to support colleagues. NECU supports the enforcement community across 14 geographical areas and national services, tackling around 40,000 suspected and alleged offences each year.
Experience and Skills (Qualifications)
* Experience collecting and evaluating data from a wide variety of sources to produce or inform intelligence products; ability to interrogate IT systems and databases; enthusiasm and curiosity for finding information.
* Good communication skills with the ability to listen and transmit information effectively.
* Ability to represent the Environment Agency professionally with partners.
* Ability to use initiative and adapt approach when needed.
* Proficiency with standard IT packages and the ability to retrieve information accurately.
* Strong teamwork and an inclusive, supportive approach to colleagues and customers.
* Ability to juggle multiple tasks and administrative activities to support colleagues and customers.
