Senior Electrical Engineer – Environment Agency

This role is an exciting opportunity for an experienced electrical engineer with knowledge of high, medium, low and extra‑low voltage electrical systems and equipment to join the Environment Agency’s Standards and Engineering team as a Senior Electrical Engineer. Expertise in control‑systems design and SCADA/telemetry systems will be beneficial.

You will be part of the MEICA Engineering Standards team within the Flood and Coastal Risk Management Directorate. Working with the Technical Authority, you will provide technical engineering leadership and support to the whole organisation to meet objectives for safe, reliable and sustainable assets, and to help achieve net zero commitments.


Responsibilities

* Manage, develop and maintain electrical engineering standards, including electrical safety rules, for HV and LV power systems and control systems within assets such as pumping stations, water management and flood defence structures.
* Develop, deliver and maintain competency and skills guidance for staff managing or working on electrical systems and equipment.
* Hold a national incident response role, which may be within normal working hours or out of hours.
* Draft and publish electrical policy, instructions and guidance.
* Lead technical design and implementation activities that support the Organisation’s strategic objectives.


Qualifications

* Good working knowledge of Electricity at Work regulations and BS 7671 IET wiring regulations.
* Solid knowledge of control systems, including application of IEC 61508, IEC 62061 and BS EN 13489, and telemetry/SCADA systems.
* Experience with high and low voltage generation and distribution systems.
* Experience developing and delivering safe systems of work, risk assessments and method statements.
* Skill in testing, isolating and proving high and low voltage electrical systems.
* Understanding of risk‑based approaches to electrical maintenance philosophies and the application of Failure Mode Effects Analysis, reliability systems and processes.
* Strong communication, team‑working and work‑management skills.
* Requires current membership of a recognised engineering institution and registration as a Chartered Engineer with the UK Engineering Council (or evidence of working toward registration within 12 months).

Additional information: This is a hybrid role; a base location will be allocated near your home. Appropriate training will be provided. The role also includes an incident management objective as part of your development plan.
