Overview
This is a one year term post to cover maternity leave. The CAMHS Advanced Nurse Practitioners work within the Prescribing Team at Chesterfield CAMHS. They contribute to the delivery of outstanding patient care by applying advanced clinical expertise, judgment, discretion and decision making in clinical care. They use highly developed specialist knowledge and skills to work autonomously in completing clinical assessments, interpreting clinical information, diagnosing, formulating complex treatment plans and evaluating care and treatment. They are high profile, accessible and responsive leaders with the ability to demonstrate critical thinking in decision making within CAMHS. They take responsibility for their own evidence-based practice and contribute to the body of knowledge that supports CAMHS nursing practice locally and nationally. They lead on strategic planning, service objectives and operational developments of the service in collaboration with others. They lead and participate in research and audit activity, facilitating continuous quality improvements and promote the service and clinical excellence through presenting innovations, audits and research. They develop and deliver specialist educational strategies for all disciplines, analyzing ongoing training needs.
Responsibilities
* To be an advanced skilled practitioner within a multi-disciplinary team, providing specialist mental health services to children, adolescents and families in North Derbyshire.
* To plan, implement and manage a range of complex therapeutic interventions, including psycho-pharmacological interventions, to ensure a client-led service and coordinated response with other agencies.
* To establish a coordinated system of specialist teaching for students within CAMHS and link with the Specialist Community Advisor service to contribute to training for mental health care partners.
* To provide specialist advice and consultation to professionals involved in the care of children and adolescents.
* To liaise and provide consultations for colleagues in CAMHS and affiliated professions.
* To provide leadership for nurses in CAMHS.
Clinical Practice and Service Delivery
* Autonomously manage case load with responsibility for the case management of a varied caseload including children and young people with severe and complex needs.
* Provide expert assessment for those meeting the service criteria for the specialist mental health service.
* Utilise a case management model for highly specialised assessment, planning, implementation of treatment and evaluation of complex needs.
* Deliver highly skilled therapeutic interventions with individuals, families and groups, drawing on evidence-based practice, specialist training and NICE guidelines.
* Ensure high levels of skilled practice through regular clinical and managerial supervision and provide skilled supervision to colleagues.
* Develop and implement clinical treatment plans in collaboration with the young person and their families/carers.
* Maintain accurate communication and liaison with colleagues, referrers, primary care and external agencies.
* Maintain high knowledge of child protection, mental health, child health and relevant legislation; attend and contribute to statutory child protection conferences and risk strategy meetings as needed.
* Communicate with young people, children and families in a way that empowers informed decision-making.
* Monitor the physical and mental health of children on medication for complex conditions (e.g., ADHD) and make clinical decisions accordingly.
* Engage in personal and professional development and stay abreast of clinical developments within the specialty.
* Maintain registration with the NMC and adhere to the NMC code of professional conduct.
* Promote and develop specialist nursing policies within CAMHS and undertake urgent/emergency mental health assessments as necessary.
* Autonomously make clinical decisions within assessments and work with families to identify appropriate treatment interventions.
* Promote broader understanding of mental health issues relating to young people among referrers, other professionals and the wider community.
* Observe confidentiality in all matters relating to clients’ affairs and treatment and keep accurate records for review and evaluation of CAMHS provision.
Non-Medical Prescribing
* Provide non-medical supplementary/independent prescribing to young people on the caseload.
* Prescribe controlled drugs and POMs safely, acknowledging scope of practice and adhering to legislation.
* Participate in non-medical prescribing supervision with a nominated consultant child & adolescent psychiatrist; maintain high standards of prescribing practice through CPD.
* Prescribe within the clinical boundaries of CAMHS; use formal clinical management plans in line with Department of Health guidelines where appropriate.
* Engage in reviews of the non-medical prescribing role and report benefits and drawbacks to the CAMHS Clinical Leadership Team.
* Work within legal and ethical prescribing frameworks for young people and uphold NMC standards of prescribing practice.
Communication
* Communicate effectively with children, adolescents, carers and staff across the health community to maximise client outcomes.
* Utilise persuasive, motivational and explanatory communication to encourage behaviour change where needed.
* Employ diverse communication methods to overcome barriers; manage and convey complex, sensitive, and potentially contentious information with empathy and reassurance, challenging appropriately when required.
Quality Governance
* Be actively involved in implementing and developing Quality Governance.
* Collate and interpret quantitative and qualitative data to provide evidence of productivity, outcomes and quality of care.
* Lead and participate in clinical audit and research; maintain a CPD portfolio.
* Lead development of CAMHS nursing practice, including training, audit and maintaining professional standards.
* Support and participate in the training of student nurses.
Organisational
* Accurately collect activity data required for service monitoring, management and evaluation.
* Plan, prioritise and organise to deliver patient care and service demands; remain flexible to client needs.
Leadership
* Develop proposals and business cases for future service development/innovation and provide reports as appropriate to commissioners, etc.
* Lead on strategic planning, service objectives and operational developments relating to the service.
* Develop relationships with patient support groups to ensure effective support networks.
* Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with key stakeholders, developing a national nursing profile relating to the speciality.
* Work with local and national networks promoting evidence of service development.
* Lead on policy, guidelines and protocols for the speciality in conjunction with the Clinical Lead.
* Lead and facilitate change internally and externally with patient and carer involvement.
* Act as a role model and provide nursing leadership within CAMHS.
* Provide clinical supervision within and external to the Trust to support development of individuals and practice.
* Lead investigations and reporting of incidents, complaints and concerns relating to the service, with appropriate action.
General Responsibilities
* Be familiar with relevant Operational, Personnel, Health and Safety policies and procedures (e.g., Fire, COSHH, No Smoking, Alcohol) and comply with Trust policies.
* Safeguard the health and wellbeing of children and vulnerable adults by adhering to safeguarding policies and training.
