Job Title: Vehicle Washer (HGV & Bus Wash Operations)

Purpose
To carry out the safe and compliant washing of HGVs, buses, and specialist vehicles using hydraulic ramp systems and industrial pressure-washing equipment. The role supports HCL Fleet Services’ commitment to quality, safety, and operational readiness in its fleet cleaning operations.
Key Responsibilities
1. Vehicle Washing Operations
1. Perform underside and exterior washing of HGVs, buses, and fleet vehicles using industrial hot water pressure washers.
2. Operate hydraulic ramps safely in accordance with training and manufacturer guidelines.
3. Conduct pre- and post-wash inspections to ensure vehicle cleanliness and report any visible defects or leaks.
4. Maintain consistent wash quality across all vehicle types.
2. Equipment and Safety Compliance
5. Complete daily equipment checks on ramps, pressure washers, and electrical connections before starting operations.
6. Follow all site safety protocols including permit-to-work, lock-out/tag-out, and PPE requirements.
7. Ensure ramps and platforms are clear, stable, and properly locked before working beneath raised vehicles.
8. Immediately report any faults, leaks, or unsafe conditions to the supervisor.
3. Environmental and Housekeeping Standards
9. Ensure all waste water is properly contained and disposed of under environmental regulations.
10. Maintain a clean and organised wash bay at all times, including cables, hoses, and control panels.
11. Use cleaning agents and materials responsibly to avoid chemical spills or contamination.
4. Documentation and Record-Keeping
12. Complete daily wash logs, ramp inspection forms, and safety checklists accurately.
13. Record details of completed washes, defects, and any incidents during shifts.
14. Retain all documents digitally as directed under company compliance procedures.
5. Training and Development
15. Attend mandatory Health & Safety induction and certified training on hydraulic ramp and pressure-washer operation.
16. Participate in refresher sessions and toolbox talks to maintain compliance awareness.
17. Support new staff by following standard operating procedures and safety rules.
Essential Requirements
18. Proven experience in vehicle washing, valeting, or industrial cleaning (preferably HGV or bus).
19. Physically fit and able to work in wet, outdoor environments.
20. Understanding of basic mechanical safety and manual handling practices.
21. Willingness to wear full PPE including waterproofs, gloves, goggles, and boots.
22. Punctual, disciplined, and capable of working to tight operational schedules.
Desirable
23. Previous work within a transport depot, logistics yard, or fleet maintenance environment.
24. Basic electrical or mechanical awareness relating to pressure washers or lifts.
25. Valid UK driving licence (HGV desirable but not essential).

All work must be undertaken in accordance with HCL’s risk assessments, RAMS, and operational safety systems. Staff are expected to take reasonable care of themselves and colleagues, immediately report hazards, and adhere to all regulatory and insurance requirements governing the lifting and washing of vehicles.
Hours and Pay
26. Shift patterns: flexible day and evening shifts (full-time).
27. Median hourly rate benchmark: £12.25 – £14.00 depending on experience and shift.
