Position Title – Student Welfare Officer
Location – 6 Mitre Passage, North Greenwich / Hybrid (4 days pw on site)
Salary – £35,000 pa
Contract Type – Permanent

Role Purpose:
The Student Welfare Officer plays a vital role in supporting the wellbeing of students at Escape Studios—a specialist higher education institution renowned for its creative industry-focused courses and diverse student body. With a student population exhibiting higher than average levels of additional learning needs (ALN), the role requires a proactive, empathetic, and knowledgeable individual committed to creating a supportive and inclusive student experience.
The postholder will be a key point of contact for students experiencing personal, social, or emotional challenges, and will work closely with academic and support services to ensure that all students are able to thrive during their time at Escape Studios.
Key responsibilities:
Student support and guidance-
- Act as the first point of contact for students facing non-academic challenges, offering a supportive and confidential space.
- Provide timely and accurate advice on internal and external support services, including mental health, financial hardship, accommodation, and specialist learning support.
- Offer one-to-one support and help students navigate personal challenges that may impact their studies or overall wellbeing.
Additional learning needs and inclusion -
· Work closely with the Access and Participation Manager to maintain accurate records of students with ALN.
· Help implement reasonable adjustments and individual support plans in collaboration with relevant academic and professional service teams.
· Promote awareness and inclusivity across the institution for students with diverse support needs.
Events and community engagement -
· Support the organisation and delivery of events that promote social inclusion, student wellbeing, and a sense of belonging.
· Collaborate with the Community and Events Coordinator to ensure that activities are accessible and relevant to the diverse student population.
Collaboration and safeguarding -
· Liaise with internal staff and external agencies (e.g. counselling services, NHS, charities) as necessary to support individual students.
· Contribute to safeguarding and duty of care processes, ensuring students at risk are appropriately referred and supported.
· Maintain accurate case notes and uphold data protection and confidentiality standards at all times.
General administration -
· Monitor student attendance and maintain accurate records of attendance meetings.
· Support the communication of the importance of maintaining required attendance to students and arrange attendance meetings with students at risk of falling below the required attendance level.
· In line with the fitness to study policy, arrange meetings with students and appropriate members of staff when required.
· Assist with minute-taking, record keeping, and report writing as needed.
· Participate in team meetings, training sessions, and relevant committees.
· Undertake any additional duties as required by the Head of Student and Community Services.

· Organisational Skills Manages a varied workload with attention to detail, keeping accurate records and following up on action plans efficiently.
· Cultural Awareness and Inclusivity Promotes an inclusive environment and understands the support needs of students with additional learning needs and diverse lived experiences.
Qualifications and Previous Experience:
· Experience in student support, welfare, or pastoral roles (preferably in a higher or further education setting)
· Strong interpersonal and communication skills with an empathetic and non-judgmental approach
· Proven ability to handle confidential and sensitive information responsibly
· Ability to remain calm under pressure and manage challenging situations effectively
· Understanding of additional learning needs and inclusive support practices
· Organised, self-motivated, and able to work independently and as part of a small, collaborative team
· Knowledge of the UK higher education sector and relevant legislation (e.g. Equality Act 2010, GDPR)
· Experience working with young adults or neurodivergent individuals
· Mental Health First Aid training or equivalent
· Familiarity with safeguarding protocols and support frameworks
