Job Summary

The post holder will work closely with a variety of service leads across the pharmacy departments including the Operational Lead Technician, Specialised Pharmacy Teams, Clinical Lead Pharmacists and Heads of Department in the provision and development of pharmacy services and medication safety and governance services to the Trust. The post-holder may be expected to support any of the following services irrespective of the specialty of their designated post: Main dispensary; Ward Clinical Medication Reconciliations service; Pharmacy IT; Pharmacy Procurement; Homecare; Clinical Trials; Oncology Outsourcing; Pharmacy Medication Safety and Governance.


Main duties of the job

* Clinical Duties: Dispense inpatient, outpatient and TTA (discharge) prescriptions. Process prescriptions using the pharmacy stock control and ePrescribing system, select, count, package and label prescription items according to department procedure. Make records as necessary. Dispense Clinical trial material according to trial procedures. Final check clinically screened prescriptions and orders prepared by other Pharmacy staff before release to the patient. Check the TTA prescriptions against patients own drugs, arrange for further supplies to be dispensed if necessary and remove discontinued medicines. Identify patient compliance issues: arrange dispensing of blister packed medicines, liaising with doctor and community Pharmacy. Provide other compliance aids as necessary. Supply/administer medication against approved patient group directives (PGDs) ensuring records are kept as appropriate. Assist with the day to day running of the homecare service.
* Communication/Clinical Pharmacy Administration: Develop and maintain effective working relationships with staff and patients across rotation specialties; inform and educate patients, carers and the public about the safe use of medicines; receive prescriptions from patients, ward staff and other clients, identify, resolve or refer queries at point of reception, and forward prescriptions to the correct location for dispensing.
* Analytical and Planning: Plan and organise own workload in accordance with the requirements of the rotation specialty.
* Policy and Service Development: Investigate incident reports as requested by the Senior Pharmacy Technician.
* Financial and Physical Resources: Participate in the delivery of Trust/department objectives and business plans; take payment for prescription charges and issue receipts and refunds; ensure safe and secure storage of pharmacy stock and monitor storage on wards; work closely with pharmacists for discharge facilitation and reuse of patients own medicines; partake in general housekeeping duties.
* Staff Management: Under the discretion of the Pharmacy Operations Lead, supervise Student Technicians and ancillary staff involved in listed duties.
* Information Resources: Maintain Pharmacy IT systems; assist users with Pharmacy and ePrescribing Wellsky issues; respond to user emails; assist with planning and upgrades to Pharmacy IT systems; run and maintain pharmacy reports; keep accurate patient medication information in Trust IT systems; assist with intervention monitoring by regularly recording clinical interventions and activities.


Person Specification

Essential

* BTEC/NVQ Level 3 in Pharmaceutical Sciences
* Registration with General Pharmaceutical Society
* Maths and English grade C/4 or above
* Accredited Checking Technician qualification

Desirable

* Completion of the CMMPT or other equivalent pharmacy technician clinical knowledge qualification
* Previous experience working within a pharmacy setting
* Previous NHS experience; trained in medication history taking and full medication reconciliation
