Speciality and Structure
Critical care is part of the Clinical Support division. There are 3 distinct adult critical care areas managed by clinical support across both QMC and City campuses. We rotate to expose a wide range of pathologies and specialty experience.
Queen’s Medical Centre Campus (QMC): 29-bedded Intensive Care (level 3) plus 20-bedded level 2 High Dependency Unit. Referrals come from major trauma and multiple surgical specialties. NUH is the East Midlands Major Trauma Centre and the busiest Major Trauma Centre in the UK.
Nottingham City Hospital Campus: 17 beds with up to 9 level 3 patients; major subspecialty interests include thoracic/upper GI surgery, elective orthopaedics, urology, burns and plastics, renal medicine, infectious diseases, oncology, haematology and respiratory medicine. The Trent Cardiac Unit with its own ICU is also housed here.
There is a well-established critical care outreach team on both campuses. NUH CCOT provides support to all medical and surgical areas seven days a week, 08:00–22:00.
Non-Clinical and Educational Opportunities
Within NUH, Junior Critical Care Fellows have the opportunity and paid time (15 days of CPD) to pursue interests in clinical and non-clinical areas, including simulation, teaching, governance and quality improvement. There are extensive learning resources and regular educational meetings each week (journal clubs, ITU rounds and morbidity meetings). A monthly protected teaching day is provided for Fellows, along with optional days covering non-clinical topics. Libraries and IT facilities are available at both sites.
FICE & FUSIC: Trainees can gain FICE and FUSIC accreditation with mentors and experienced consultants in TOE.
Research and Professional Development
Research opportunities are available by special arrangement. Critical Care has links with the Academic Departments of Anaesthesia and Surgery, and participation in ongoing research and audit programmes is encouraged.
Time for Continuing Professional Development (CPD): 15 days per 6 months. CPD time can be used for postgraduate exam preparation and educational activities, subject to supervisor appraisal and rota considerations. CPD days are pro-rata for a 44-week working year and should not be taken more than two consecutive days without prior arrangement.
Applications for training posts: The department has a strong reputation for recruitment into higher specialty training. Applicants are encouraged to develop their portfolio and may receive support from consultants who interview for National Anaesthesia Recruitment.
