Overview

We would like to recruit a highly skilled, motivated, flexible and enthusiastic Band 8a AOS ANP. The postholder will be responsible for undertaking comprehensive health assessments, physical examinations and ordering diagnostic tests for cancer patients attending the Centre for Urgent Care on both sites, who present unwell due to their treatment and/or disease. Using advanced clinical decision making and assessment skills, prompt treatment plans or referrals will be initiated to effectively manage acute and chronic cancer‑related complications and/or toxicities from systemic anti‑cancer treatments and/or radiotherapy.

The postholder will be involved in establishing, delivering and leading a comprehensive acute oncology service within the Trust in line with the Acute Oncology Measures. Fundamentally working as an autonomous and advanced practitioner assessing, diagnosing and treating patients in an appropriate and timely fashion. The role is a key part of the Acute Oncology Team and will be expected to work across both Sutton and Chelsea sites with flexibility to ensure service coverage, particularly during periods of annual leave and study leave.

Responsibilities

* Provide clinical leadership and maintain credibility through practice and professional update.
* Practice evidence‑based nursing care to ensure high quality care.
* Act as an expert nurse and resource for patients, families and staff.
* Admit and discharge or transfer patients as their needs require.
* Undertake advanced clinical assessments of acutely unwell oncology patients to enable prompt assessment, diagnosis and treatment according to agreed policies, protocols and guidelines.
* Order and interpret blood tests and initiate appropriate action as required.
* Order diagnostic tests and imaging as appropriate.
* Complete documentation relating to patient care and ensure that staff maintain and update documentation as changes occur according to Trust policy.
* Encourage nursing staff through role‑modeling to apply critical thinking through the process of clinical assessment of patients or problem solving.
* Follow this process through the planning and evaluation stages of patient care and effectively document it in the patient records.
* Liaise and work closely with relevant multi‑disciplinary team members, including Medical Consultants and Clinical Nurse Specialists, in the provision of professional cancer nursing service.
* Provide support for anxious patients and/or relatives demonstrating empathy and understanding in a professional manner.
* Provide empathetic support when involved in the process of giving patients and/or relatives bad news, e.g. informing patients/relatives of changes of condition.
