Synthetic Chemist with experience in optically active nanocomposite materials

R&D, Full-time, Cambridge

Lambda Energy (trading as Lambda agri) is a Cambridge-based advanced materials start-up company that develops spectral converters for boosting the productivity of greenhouses, with other applications in the future. Lambda’s converters are used as part of an active coating on the surface of glass or incorporated within a polytunnel sheeting, which converts photons from higher to lower energy thus enabling more effective photosynthesis.

Lambda secured significant amounts of public and private funding during the last year and is presently running a UK Government funded R&D project with leading UK research institutes.

Currently, Lambda’s R&D team incorporates experts in Nanophysics, Photochemistry and Synthetic Chemistry. We are now looking for a new team member to help us maintain and expand our competitive tech advantage and expand our IP portfolio before we proceed to a Series-A fundraise next year.

This is a superb opportunity to join this exciting venture at an early stage and lend your experience to the advanced materials/AgriTech sectors.

We will offer a competitive salary with share options and flexible working.

To qualify for the position of Synthetic Chemist with experience in nanocomposite materials synthesis, you should:

· hold a PhD (or equivalent) in synthetic chemistry, materials science, or a closely related discipline;

· have experience in nano-composite manufacture from melt and / or solution, making homogeneous nanoparticle dispersions in polymers;

· have experience in the synthesis, modification, and characterization of nanoparticles and other fluorophores;

· have experience on optimal surface engineering of nanoparticles, e.g., via ligand addition or modification;

· have experience in a variety of film forming methods of polymers to achieve thin and thick films, free-standing and on a substrate;

· have a proven track record of scientific excellence;

· have a good understanding of nano and nano-composite materials;

· more generally, have significant hands-on technical experience, a desire to come up with new concepts and build prototypes;

· be self-motivated and have the ability to work as part of a small, interdisciplinary team of scientifically competitive people;

· have strong scientific curiosity and be willing to tackle difficult problems

· be comfortable working flexibly within a very early-stage, fast paced start-up environment;

· at the time of starting their employment, successful candidates must have permission to work in the UK.

Ideally you would:

· have experience developing industrial processing technologies and managing technology-based projects;

· have experience with polymer / encapsulation formulations that are optimised for durability in challenging environmental conditions;

· have experience in polymer testing and analysis, especially with respect to environmental durability/accelerated ageing;

· have some experience in reliability engineering and failure analysis;

· have had a chance to make first experiences in an industrial setting;

· have experience in surface characterization methods, such as SEM, XPS, etc;

· have a thorough understanding of photochemical / photophysical / optical principles.

In return, we offer:

· a chance to make a real difference in the world

· a company share option scheme

· a warm and friendly work environment

· an intellectually stimulating atmosphere

· an opportunity for hands-on professional development
