Job Summary

Special Care Dentist Band A Part Time, 0.4WTE – Permanent.

We are looking for an enthusiastic Dentist to join our team in Chippenham, providing Special Care and Urgent Care to adults and children in the local community.

Hours: 8:30‑17:00 with one hour lunch, 2 days per week. The post holder may work at any of the four Community Dental Service clinics in Wiltshire & Swindon, in domiciliary settings, or within main hospitals. A motor‑vehicle licence and ability to travel throughout Wiltshire is essential. The role includes support from a Senior Leadership team, mentoring and line management. Main Duties of the Job

* Provide Special Care Dentistry, Paediatric Dentistry, and Urgent Care Dentistry.
* Participate in the Out of Hours Service and offer urgent care to Wiltshire and Swindon residents.
* Deliver services within the GWHFT Community Dental Service contract and manage a defined clinical area at the Chippenham Dental Access Centre.
* Work across 4 sites and domiciliary settings; may be required to attend General Anaesthetic & Inhalation Sedation lists.
* Plan a typical week of one day Special Care/Paediatric, one day urgent care, and a combined session of Special Care/Paediatric Dentistry.

Job Description / Responsibilities

* Assess, plan and treat patients with special needs (learning difficulties, physical disabilities, medically compromised, behavioural problems), and children with additional needs or under‑5s with high caries rates.
* Provide urgent, routine and complex treatments following Trust protocol and current best practice.
* Treat in domiciliary settings and promote oral health within NHS regulations.
* Work with the wider clinical team to deliver high‑quality care.
* Achieve personal performance targets, understand the UDA system and meet Commissioner set targets.
* Meet Band A Dental Officer Competencies and participate in Clinical Governance programmes (audit, peer review, performance appraisal).
* Maintain standards required by the General Dental Council, including CPD.
* Ensure estimates printed for all Band 2 & Band 3 courses of treatment (COT).
* Close completed courses of treatment when finished.
* Supervise Dental Nurses in a defined clinical area alongside the Dental Nurse Team Manager.
* Travel as required across Wiltshire, drive a vehicle and use VDU equipment.
* Maintain core hours 8:30‑17:00 with one hour lunch.
* Provide urgent care daily, special care and paediatric dentistry for children with additional needs and under‑5s with high caries rates; optional participation in the Out of Hours Dental Service.

Person Specification


Qualifications

* Essential: BDS or equivalent; full registration with GDC; VT Number or equivalent; commitment to CPD; on the NHS Dental Performers List.
* Desirable: familiarity with Dental IT systems; commitment to learn NHS rules and regulations.


Experience

* Essential: significant experience of routine dental care.
* Desirable: experience working in a Community Dental Service; experience of complex dental care; appropriate postgraduate qualification; prior use of systems for dentists health practice management software.
