About the Specialist Finance Underwriter Role
As a Senior Underwriter / Head of Underwriting, you’ll play a central role in assessing, structuring, and underwriting real estate and specialist finance cases from enquiry through to completion. This is a senior, high-responsibility position where you will work closely with brokers, valuers, solicitors, and internal teams to ensure each case is rigorously assessed and delivered with accuracy and pace. Secondary experience in other roles across the property finance sector is welcomed and highly valued, though it is not essential.
Key Responsibilities
* Underwrite real estate and specialist finance cases, ensuring all credit, risk, and AML requirements are fully met.
* Conduct detailed analysis of borrower financials, project viability, exit strategies, and security.
* Review valuations, QS reports, cost schedules, and development or investment appraisals.
* Work closely with the Credit Committee, presenting cases with clarity, accuracy, and commercial awareness
* Liaise with brokers, solicitors, and external stakeholders to drive cases efficiently through to completion
* Ensure all underwriting decisions adhere to lending policy, regulation, AML standards, and internal procedures.
* Identify potential risks early and provide practical, commercially driven solutions.
* Support ongoing portfolio monitoring by reviewing progress reports, drawdowns, and project performance.

Skills & Experience Required
* Proven experience underwriting real estate and specialist finance cases
* Strong understanding of appraisals, cost plans, valuations, and QS reporting
* Solid AML and KYC knowledge with the ability to interpret complex structures
* Experience in a senior underwriting or risk role with the ability to make autonomous, evidence-based decisions
* Confident communicator and trusted advisor to brokers, developers, and senior leadership
* Highly organised, detail-oriented, and capable of managing a high volume of complex cases
* Secondary experience in other roles within the property finance industry desirable but not essential
