Job Overview
This is an exciting opportunity to join an established team of 11 Consultants in Respiratory Medicine at the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust. The role involves supporting two purpose‑built wards and an outpatient service delivered in a dedicated respiratory centre. The Trust offers specialist services for COPD, ILD, lung cancer, sleep and ventilation, TB, severe asthma, cystic fibrosis and pleural diseases.
Responsibilities
1. Provide and develop acute medical and respiratory services in collaboration with colleagues across all disciplines, including primary and tertiary care.
2. Take ongoing responsibility for patients under your care.
3. Participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes.
4. Recruit patients to NIHR trials on the respiratory portfolio.
5. Develop the agreed special skills and interests appropriate to the overall development of the service.
6. Contribute to the bronchoscopy service (including EBUS), share general acute medical duties, and be responsible for 7‑day service within the consultant‑based ward system.
7. Be on‑call for telephone advice and major incidents.
8. Collaborate with medical colleagues in other specialties, attend clinical meetings and postgraduate activities.
9. Provide professional supervision and development of trainee doctors, including educational and clinical supervision and appraisal of junior doctors.
10. Maintain good communication with general practitioners and appropriate outside agencies.
11. Engage in clinical governance, risk management, audit and the development of systems to ensure safe clinical practice.
12. Provide respiratory services in conjunction with established physicians, covering annual study, professional leave and other cover as outlined in the rota.
13. Maintain up‑to‑date practice, undertake continuing professional development and participate in the Trust’s performance review.
14. Ensure arrangements so that hospital staff involved in patient care can contact you when necessary.
Junior Medical Staff Supervision
1. In conjunction with consultants and senior colleagues, professional supervise and manage junior medical staff.
2. Take responsibility for teaching, examination and accreditation duties for junior staff.
Management & Service Development
1. In conjunction with the Divisional Manager, consultants and senior colleagues, actively manage the division.
2. Develop and implement new ways of working aligned with modernisation principles and future‑ready practice.
3. Optimise departmental staffing and resources to ensure maximum efficiency.
4. Observe Trust policies, standing orders and financial instructions.
Clinical Governance
1. Ensure clinical governance requirements are met in collaboration with consultant colleagues.
Health & Safety
1. Take responsibility for personal health and safety, complying with all policies and procedures.
2. Report and manage hazards to protect staff and patients.
Any Other Duties
Perform additional duties as deemed appropriate by the Trust.

Facilities
In‑patient: 2 purpose‑built wards with enhanced ventilation, RSU beds, and provision of acute NIV, tracheostomy care and HFNO.
Out‑patient: Specialist and general respiratory clinics delivered in a purpose‑built outpatient department at New Cross and at Cannock Chase Hospital, including Lung Cancer, COPD, ILD, and general respiratory cases.
Application Focus
The role is an ideal fit for a Consultant with an interest in Interstitial Lung Disease and cystic fibrosis, though other subspecialty interests are welcomed. The selected candidate will contribute to the bronchoscopy and/or EBUS rota and will work flexibly with consultant colleagues to provide cover as outlined in the rota.
