Wellbeing Support Assistant

Location: Sunderland
Contract: Term-time only
Hours: 08:30 – 15:30, Monday – Friday
Start: ASAP

Are you passionate about supporting children’s emotional wellbeing and helping them feel safe, confident, and ready to learn? Do you want to play a vital role in supporting primary-age pupils to regulate emotions, build resilience, and thrive in school? Milk Education is working in partnership with a welcoming and inclusive primary school in Sunderland to appoint a dedicated Wellbeing Support Assistant to join their supportive team.

Role: Wellbeing Support Assistant

As a Wellbeing Support Assistant, you will work closely with class teachers, SEN staff, and pastoral leads to support pupils’ emotional wellbeing, engagement, and personal development. You will provide targeted support both in and out of the classroom, helping children develop self-regulation skills, confidence, and positive relationships.

Key Responsibilities

Emotional & Wellbeing Support
• Provide 1:1 and small group support for pupils requiring additional emotional support
• Support children in developing emotional regulation and coping strategies
• Help pupils identify and express their feelings in a safe and constructive way
• Deliver or support targeted wellbeing or nurture interventions

Supporting Pupil Engagement
• Assist pupils in re-engaging with learning following emotional dysregulation
• Adapt approaches to meet individual social, emotional, and behavioural needs
• Provide calm and consistent support throughout the school day
• Work closely with teaching staff to ensure pupils can access the curriculum

Promoting Positive Behaviour
• Model calm, consistent, and nurturing behaviour at all times
• Use trauma-informed and restorative approaches in line with school policy
• Support pupils in developing positive peer relationships
• Help create a safe and respectful learning environment

Supporting Development & Life Skills
• Encourage resilience, independence, and self-confidence
• Support pupils during transitions throughout the school day
• Promote inclusion and a strong sense of belonging
• Contribute to a positive school culture where every child feels heard and valued

Essential Criteria

• Experience working with primary-aged children (school-based experience desirable)
• Experience supporting children with SEMH, SEND, or additional wellbeing needs
• A calm, patient, and nurturing approach
• Strong communication and teamwork skills
• A genuine passion for supporting children’s emotional development
• Relevant qualification in Supporting Teaching & Learning, Childcare, or similar (desirable)
• Knowledge of trauma-informed practice (desirable)
