SEMH Teaching Assistant
Can you bring calm where there is chaos, care where there is challenge, and consistency where it matters most? As a SEMH Teaching Assistant, you'll be a child's safe person who helps them feel understood, supported, and ready to learn.
The Role
This is a long-term temporary role, with the potential to become permanent. The successful applicant will support pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs, both one-to-one and within the classroom. Daily responsibilities will include:
* Supporting pupils with emotional regulation and behaviour
* Delivering or supporting small-group interventions such as Zones of Regulation, ELSA, or social skills programmes
* Responding calmly and consistently to emotional or behavioural dysregulation
* Working closely with teaching and pastoral staff to implement behaviour and support plans
* Supporting transitions between activities and throughout the school day to reduce anxiety and increase pupil engagement
* Maintaining records and providing feedback on progress and concerns
The role requires an emotionally intelligent, reliable individual who understands trauma-informed practice and can act as a steady, positive presence for children with SEMH needs.
The Ideal Person and Skills / Education Needed
Applicants must:
* Teaching Assistant qualification
* Have experience working with children with SEND, SEMH, or behavioural needs
* Additional experience or training in areas such as ELSA, counselling, mentoring, or therapeutic interventions is beneficial
* Be resilient, emotionally attuned, and confident managing challenging behaviour
* Be committed to safeguarding and supporting the wider emotional wellbeing of pupils
The School
This mainstream primary is committed to inclusion and pupil well-being. With a strong pastoral approach, the school works hard to ensure pupils with SEMH needs feel safe, supported and understood. Staff collaborate closely to create a calm, consistent learning environment that supports the whole child.
Hours
Monday to Friday, 8.30 am to 3.30 pm. Full-time and part-time applicants welcome.

Safeguarding children is an integral part of what we do and we have a stringent safer recruitment process. We undertake checks on all the candidates we work with. As such we require a current Enhanced DBS Disclosure for everyone working in Schools. If you do not have a subscription to the DBS Update Service, you may be required to complete a new DBS application as part of the registration process. If you take a temporary role with Sense Education you will be paid on a weekly basis. All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position but long term. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available.
