Job Overview

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us. This post is intended for Junior Fellows who wish to gain experience in managing Level 3 and Level 2 patients in an Intensive Care Unit. The role provides an excellent opportunity to gain experience assessing and managing all critically ill patients with supervision from a dedicated intensive care consultant.


Main Responsibilities

* Implement and assist with patient care in a 32‑bed General Intensive Care Unit, admitting approximately 1800 patients per year.
* Assist with central venous and arterial line insertions, ultrasound of the chest, and focused echocardiograms.
* Participate in multidisciplinary ward rounds with physiotherapists, pharmacists, dieticians, and microbiologists.
* Engage in research projects and clinical trials as part of the unit’s national and international research programmes.
* Support teaching programmes, including simulation-based training, clinical scenarios, didactic lectures, and journal clubs.
* Maintain accurate clinical documentation and uphold the Trust’s standards of patient care.
* Work within the 40 hourly schedule with flexibility for weekend and on‑call duties as required.


Qualifications and Training

Essential Criteria

* MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
* GMC registration with a licence to practise.
* At least 2 years post‑qualification.
* Evidence and ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.
* Demonstrated good organisational and communication skills.
* Ability to remain calm and compassionate in rapidly changing clinical situations.

Desirable Criteria

* Intensive Care skills and experience in acute speciality.
* Completion of foundation competencies or equivalent.
* Basic IT skills.
* FRCA / MRCP / FRCS / MCEM or equivalent.
* Current ALS / ATLS certification.
* Previous Intensive Care Medicine or Anaesthesia experience within the NHS.


Additional Information

* Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions for Trust‑appointed non‑training fellow doctors.
* Applicants requiring Skilled Worker sponsorship should confirm Home Office criteria before applying.
* The successful candidate will receive an educational framework equivalent to a training grade doctor and a named educational supervisor.
* The Trust offers a competitive basic salary plus additional remuneration for overtime, weekend allowance, and enhanced pay as appropriate.
* Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and study leave are supported.
* This vacancy closes on or before 5th November 2025.

o Intensive Care skills.
