Harbour Assistant – Seahouses North Sunderland Harbour Commission are looking for a Harbour Assistant. The shift times and pay will be dependent on experience. This is a unique opportunity for someone who would enjoy working outdoors in our beautiful harbour and be part of the Seahouses village and harbour community. This is a varied role, requires some knowledge of marine activities, and ability to carry out routine maintenance around the harbour. Reporting to the Harbour Master, the role ensures that the harbour is safe for those who visit and work here and looking its best.
General Duties – Harbour Assistant
* Working under the direction and support of the Harbour Master, the Harbour Assistants carry out a broad range of day-to-day harbour operations and maintenance activities as required.
* This post is essential to providing a safe working environment for harbour users and a safe and enjoyable experience for visitors.
Key duties and accountabilities of the post
* Collecting harbour charges for use of all harbour facilities, including slipway fees and visiting vessel charges.
* Assisting the Harbour Master to enforce harbour byelaws and health and safety and environmental compliance.
* Helping visitors and harbour users - taking telephone enquiries and operating marine VHF.
* Attending to harbour office duties during weekends as part of a weekend rota.
* Maintaining NSHC car park machines, making sure they are operating correctly, filled with tickets and managing cash from machines.
* Checking visitor vehicles have paid and displayed parking tickets.
* General maintenance of harbour and equipment including fuel system, harbour cranes. Keeping passenger access to boats safe - e.g. steps and the public slip way is clear and free of marine growth.
* Operating the fork lift truck as directed and carry out routine daily maintenance checks (training can be given).
* Completing basic notes or such paperwork as may sometimes be necessary, including the harbour log book. Operate basic IT functions incl. Emails
* Undertaking such other duties as required by the Harbour Master, commensurate with the grade of the post.
* Ensuring the harbour is kept free of litter and is clean and tidy.
Job Types: Part-time, Zero hours contract
Pay: £12.21-£20.00 per hour
Expected hours: 16 – 35 per week
