This post is intended for Junior Fellows who wish to gain experience in managing Level 3 and Level 2 patients in a General Intensive Care Unit (GICU). You will gain experience assessing and managing all critically ill patients with supervision from a dedicated intensive care consultant.

About the Unit and Role
University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS) General Intensive Care Unit (GICU) is a very busy 32-bed unit and one of the largest acute teaching hospital trusts on the south coast of England. We are rated as “outstanding” by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). Our department admits approximately 1800 patients per year, including around 900 Level 3 admissions, and provides Critical Care services for a wide range of specialties including complex surgical, medical, trauma, vascular, hepatobiliary, and thoracic surgical patients. The unit is recognised by the Intercollegiate Board for Training in ICM at all levels, including the CCT programme.
There is ample opportunity to gain training and experience in all aspects of Intensive Care Medicine in a large multidisciplinary General Intensive Care Unit. The unit admits patients from a wide range of specialties and offers exposure to acute medical procedures such as central venous and arterial line insertions, ultrasound of the chest, and focused echocardiograms. The team includes twenty-one consultants and 30–40 junior/senior trainees with varied backgrounds, with daily multidisciplinary rounds supported by dedicated physiotherapists, pharmacists, dietitians, and microbiologists. Our staff are actively involved in national and international research and regularly participate in research projects and trials. The academic unit provides regular teaching programmes, including simulation-based training (SIM), clinical scenarios, didactic lectures, and journal clubs on intensive care topics.
Responsibilities
 * Provide care and management for Level 2 and Level 3 patients in the GICU under supervision of a dedicated intensive care consultant.
 * Participate in daily multidisciplinary rounds and contribute to patient care planning.
 * Assist with a range of acute medical and surgical procedures as part of critical care practice.
 * Engage with teaching and training opportunities offered by the unit, including simulation-based training and didactic sessions.
Qualifications and Requirements
 * Educational framework equivalent to training grade doctors; named educational supervisor assigned at the start of the post.
 * Willingness to engage in Continued Professional Development (CPD) with study leave options available.
 * Eligibility for appointment under local contractual terms; applicants requiring Skilled Worker sponsorship should meet Home Office criteria prior to application.
Additional Information
 * Appointment will be made under local terms and conditions of service for Trust-appointed (non-training) fellows.
 * Salary and progression will be based on experience and skills; basic salary at a nodal point with additional remuneration for hours as per the doctors’ work schedule (e.g., overtime, weekend allowances).
