Overview
We are recruiting to Senior Lawyer roles covering the following areas of environmental regulation:
* Waste law and regulation
* Water law and regulation
* Climate change law and regulation
The Environment Agency’s in‑house legal service comprises the Environmental Regulation (Waste and Installations) team, the Environmental Regulation (Water) team and the National Climate Change and Chemicals team. These roles offer the opportunity to work at the cutting edge of environmental regulation on challenging, rewarding and fast‑paced work.
Responsibilities
* Provide high quality legal advice to client teams on operational and regulatory issues related to environmental law.
* Handle complex legal issues and demonstrate thorough knowledge of relevant regulatory and public law principles.
* Use organisational skills, good legal judgement and an appreciation of legal risk to manage a demanding workload with a high degree of autonomy.
* Deliver work on time and maintain a record of high quality output.
* Contribute to policy and legislation development, regulatory notices, civil penalties, compliance advice to operators, civil litigation including Judicial Review and statutory appeals.
* Train colleagues on the application of relevant law.
Qualifications
* Fully qualified lawyer (solicitor, barrister or legal executive) entitled to practise in England with at least 3 years’ post‑qualification experience.
* Strong analytical skills and an ability to see legal issues in a wider context.
* Experience advising on complex environmental matters in one or more of the following areas (or willingness to develop expertise):
o Environmental Permitting
o Waste and industrial installations
o Water quality and water resources
o Climate change
o Regulation and civil enforcement
* Able to communicate effectively, be flexible and influence at all levels, including senior management and occasionally the Chief Executive.
* Demonstrated ability to manage a demanding workload independently and to deliver high‑quality work on time.

Professional Membership and Legal Status
Current practising certificate is required. Applicants from the Civil Service will not be eligible for continuous service; eligibility for local government employees is determined by the Redundancy Payments Act 1999. Previous life status should be confirmed with your HR team.
