Overview
The School of Biological and Marine Sciences wishes to appoint a Senior Technician as the Workshop Manager and small boat maintainer to oversee daily operations and ensure the efficient running of our engineering facilities at the Marine Station. You will be responsible for maintaining high engineering standards, optimizing boat availability, and delivering exceptional service to our students.
This is a unique opportunity to join the University’s Marine Station technical team, providing engineering support to staff and students in subject areas including marine science, marine biology, conservation, surveying and ocean science. It will include the day-to-day management of workshop resources and facilities, boat maintenance, to further our outstanding, student experience and world-class research.
The position is within a team of dedicated marine Technicians who support the teaching, learning and research of the School and Faculty across both undergraduate and postgraduate disciplines. You will be supporting students and maintaining and developing scientific facilities as well as ensuring that health and safety procedures are followed. Working closely with colleagues, you will be expected to share your knowledge with others, helping them to develop their ideas and fulfilling their academic potential.
Responsibilities
* Manage workshop resources and facilities to support teaching, learning and research across undergraduate and postgraduate programs.
* Oversee daily operations of the workshop and small boat maintenance for operations up to 20 miles from port.
* Ensure high engineering standards, safety procedures, risk assessment and safe systems of work are followed.
* Provide engineering support to staff and students, share knowledge, and help develop ideas and academic potential.
* Coordinate with colleagues to optimize boat availability and ensure reliable service to users.
Qualifications and Requirements
* Suitable commercially endorsed qualification for operation and maintenance of small craft up to 20 miles from port.
* Experience with risk assessment and safe systems of work; knowledge of coding and legal requirements of small commercial vessel.
* Current full driving licence (manual transmission) with the ability to drive University vehicles including a 17-seat minibus.
* Willingness to work unsociable hours, including occasional weekends and short stays away from home; training provided to maintain competence.
* Health surveillance with the Occupational Health team as required.
