Overview

Bowel Cancer Screening Specialist Practitioner (Royal Liverpool Hospital) – Band 6, Permanent, 37.5 hours per week. Closing date: 22 October 2025.


Main duties of the job

Join the Liverpool and Wirral Bowel Screening Centre (Royal Hospital site) as part of the team. You will be dynamic, highly motivated and flexible in your approach to work. You will be responsible for delivering the highest quality of care to patients identified by the screening programme and will meet their needs, including assessment for endoscopic procedures, delivery of results and onward referral as required. You will need to make clinically informed decisions to manage patients along the screening pathway and follow them up afterwards.

Qualifications include RGN with NMC registration, willingness to work flexible hours and to travel between associated sites across the region. Previous endoscopic, gastroenterological or bowel cancer screening experience is desirable but not essential.

Job responsibilities

* Provide advice, information and support for those making direct contact with the screening centre.
* Deliver care to patients identified by the screening programme and address needs arising at various stages of the pathway, including:
* Participation in screening; positive screening results; the Lynch programme; assessment of fitness for screening colonoscopy or alternative diagnostic investigations;
* Informed decision-making prior to screening colonoscopy or alternative diagnostics; follow-up, intervention, treatment, surveillance or discharge as required.
* Use specialist knowledge and advanced communication skills when breaking bad news and providing psychological support.
* Ensure timely access to screening colonoscopy or alternative diagnostics and seamless transition to appropriate pathways in primary, secondary, tertiary or out-patient care settings.
* Establish links with local colorectal cancer multidisciplinary teams to ensure timely presentation and transfer when cancer is detected; coordinate with Lynch multidisciplinary teams where appropriate.
* Populate and maintain the BCSP local database and participate in data collection, quality assurance, service feedback and audits, with responsibility for 30-day follow-up.
* Perform comprehensive assessments of patient needs and plan, implement and evaluate care according to BCSP guidelines.
* Maintain accurate patient records and collaborate with other professionals and organisations to meet patient needs, particularly regarding referrals to local MDTs.


Person Specification


Qualifications

* RGN (NMC registered)
* Diploma and/or post-registration qualification in speciality or related field
* Teaching and assessing
* Current full UK driving licence


Experience

* Broad clinical experience with a focus in the speciality
* Experience in service development and implementation of change; experience applying teaching in the work area


Skills

* Able to assess, plan, implement and evaluate specialist nursing care
* Strong communication with patients of varying understanding levels
* Clear written information presentation
* Basic IT skills (word processing and spreadsheets)
* Ability to manage own workload with minimal supervision
* Knowledge of professional and NHS issues
* Ability to develop effective interpersonal relationships with colleagues
* Experience participating in service development and change
