Role description
Our Intern & Placement programme is designed to give you hands-on insight into the work we do, with technical training and support based on Arcadis’ core values. The programme combines signposted training with real project exposure and client interaction across your 12-month placement, helping you develop technically and professionally.
Role accountabilities
Our civil engineering teams work across highways, rail, energy, and water, delivering safe, high-quality, and sustainable design solutions. As a graduate or placement student, you will be supported and mentored while contributing to projects ranging from local schemes to major international developments. You will work with diverse, multidisciplinary teams and follow a structured path toward professional qualification.
Using advanced software and digital tools, you will design new infrastructure and assess existing assets for repair or reuse. You will gain hands-on experience across sectors, learn about project delivery models, contracts, and commercial constraints, and collaborate with other disciplines while attending site visits to ensure designs are safe, buildable, and sustainable. You will help deliver resilient, low-carbon solutions that maximise environmental, social, and economic impact.
Your work will vary across sectors and projects of all scales; you will engage with clients and stakeholders and be involved in activities from concept to construction on UK and international projects.
Sector-specific responsibilities
* Highways & Transportation: design roads, junctions, bridges, and active travel routes; foundations, earthworks, retaining structures, and drainage; using tools such as Civil 3D, OpenRoads, and BIM; focus on resilience and transport planning; site visits and client engagement.
* Water: work on waste and clean water infrastructure and assets to deliver resilient water supply solutions.
* Rail: design and deliver rail infrastructure, including station infrastructure, bridges, utilities crossings, drainage, and safe access; work in a safety-critical environment with multidisciplinary collaboration; use digital tools; UK and international projects including light rail and tram.
* Energy: support grid connections and network upgrades to help meet Net Zero carbon reduction ambitions.
Qualifications & Experience
* Working towards a degree in a relevant subject.
* Arcadian skills: resilience, creativity, analytical thinking, and teamwork; excellent communication; ability to influence and consult stakeholders.
* Willing to travel and stay away from home when required (virtual working where possible).
