POST TITLE: Higher Level Teaching Assistant
REPORTING TO: Headteacher

Purpose of the Role
To complement teachers' delivery of the national curriculum and contribute to the development of support staff, pupils, and whole-school policies and strategies.
To work collaboratively with teachers and cover whole classes during short-term teacher absence.
To raise standards of achievement for all pupils—including those with SEND, EAL, high ability and underachieving groups—by using advanced knowledge and skills in planning, assessment, and class management.

Main Duties
Planning
1. Support teachers with lesson planning, evaluation, and adjustments.
2. Prepare and develop learning resources based on lesson plans and pupil needs.
3. Contribute to planning learning beyond the classroom, aligned with school policies.
Teaching and Learning
4. Deliver pre-planned lessons to whole classes during PPA or short-term absence.
5. Provide feedback to teachers and pupils on lessons and behaviour.
6. Use structured, engaging learning activities to motivate pupils.
7. Be familiar with IEP targets, lesson plans and learning objectives.
8. Promote inclusive practice and equal access to learning.
9. Support pupils with additional needs, encouraging full participation.
10. Apply behaviour strategies in line with the school’s policy.
11. Teach individuals, small groups or whole classes in the teacher’s absence.
12. Organise a safe and effective learning environment.
13. Foster independence, self-esteem and celebrate achievements.
14. Support the integration of pupils with SEND or EAL needs.
15. Engage positively with parents/carers, offering constructive updates.
Monitoring and Assessment
16. Support teachers in pupil assessment and progress tracking.
17. Adapt methods to suit individual learning needs.
18. Provide pupils with feedback to support progress.
19. Maintain records and contribute to progress reports.
20. Participate in observation and assessment programmes.
21. Assist with preparing termly and end-of-year pupil reports.
Mentoring, Supervision and Development
22. Support and guide other teaching assistants; lead induction and training.
23. Take part in school meetings and contribute to school development.
24. Attend INSET and training as directed by senior staff.
Behavioural and Pastoral Support
25. Promote inclusion, challenge discrimination, and support equal opportunities.
26. Follow safeguarding and child protection procedures.
27. Help maintain discipline and supervise on trips and visits.
28. Support pupils’ emotional and physical wellbeing.
29. Assist with use and maintenance of pupils' equipment.
30. Build supportive relationships with parents and carers.
31. Supervise pupils during break and lunchtimes as required.
32. Lead an after-school club agreed with the Headteacher.
33. Support with extracurricular and booster sessions.
34. Liaise with external professionals (e.g. therapists, SEN specialists).
35. Follow health and safety procedures at all times.
Other Responsibilities
38. Use IT effectively to carry out duties.
39. Promote and support the school's commitment to equality and diversity.
40. Undertake other reasonable duties as required by the leadership team.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
