Evidence Advisor, Data Analysis and Statistics (Fixed Term) - 31375
The Environment Agency (EA) is committed to fostering an inclusive workforce that reflects the communities we serve. We embrace diversity to benefit our staff, communities, and environment.
Are you passionate about using data to make a real-world impact? Are you ready to analyze complex environmental data and tell compelling stories about our water environment?
We are seeking two Evidence Advisors to join the EA’s Natural Capital and Ecosystem Assessment (NCEA) Programme. These roles focus on designing and analyzing data from water monitoring networks covering rivers, streams, groundwater, lakes, estuaries, and coasts.
The NCEA programme is part of the wider Defra-led initiative, gathering broad-scale data on ecosystems to reveal their benefits for people and the economy, i.e., their natural capital. Your analyses will provide evidence to ensure policy and decision-makers consider the true value of nature, supporting the UK’s environmental, net zero, and biodiversity targets.
Key Responsibilities:
* Provide statistical input into network design and implementation, with expertise in hydrogeology, freshwater ecology, or estuarine and coastal environments.
* Collaborate with network designers to ensure networks are unbiased and representative.
* Apply robust analysis techniques to evaluate network performance, assess statistical power, and interpret environmental monitoring data.
* Develop reproducible analytical pipelines.
* Conduct exploratory data analyses to identify key environmental relationships, using domain knowledge and systems mapping where appropriate.
* Integrate alternative datasets to support regional and trend analysis reporting.
* Contribute to developing metrics, indicators, and advise on future reporting requirements.
This is a fixed-term contract until 30/05/2027.
The team
You will join the Data Analysis and Statistics work package within the NCEA programme, supported by the Strategic Evidence Design and Assessment (SEDA) team. We foster a friendly, dynamic, and diverse work environment, providing training and support for staff development.
Experience/Skills Required
Background & Knowledge:
* Degree or higher qualification in environmental science, hydrogeology, freshwater ecology, with data analysis and statistics training.
* Understanding of freshwater, coastal, estuarine, or groundwater management and monitoring.
* Experience analyzing environmental or ecological data, understanding data complexities, dependencies, and biases.
* Familiarity with current/emerging environmental data science practices.
* Experience with statistical model fitting and robustness testing is advantageous.
Key Skills:
* Self-motivated, able to work independently.
* Strong written and oral communication skills.
* Proficient in R programming.
* Detail-oriented with a passion for data analysis and problem-solving.
* Ability to engage with stakeholders internally and externally.
* Strong organizational skills for managing workloads, deadlines, and priorities.
